It is with great sadness that the family of James (Jim) Roland Norris announces his passing on October 30, 2025, at the Grey Nuns Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 87.
Jim was born in Valcourt, Quebec, and spent much of his early life on his grandparents’ farm in rural Quebec. Despite a challenging upbringing, he demonstrated perseverance and determination from an early age. At seventeen, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, beginning a distinguished thirteen-year career that included service with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in the Congo. During his time in the military, he was among a select group chosen for retraining as a Canadian fighter pilot, a true testament to his skill and dedication.
While stationed in Edmonton, Jim met Shirley, who was also serving in the Air Force. They married in 1962, beginning a lifelong partnership that spanned 63 years and many adventures together. Their service led them to postings across Canada and abroad, including three years in Germany, where Jim completed his high school diploma and took every opportunity to explore Europe, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean.
Upon returning to Canada, Jim and Shirley welcomed their first child, Michael. Deeply valuing growth and education, Jim pursued post-secondary studies at the University of Alberta, earning an Undergraduate Degree in Political Science, completing two years of Law School, and obtaining a Degree in Education. Upon completion of his studies, Jim and Shirley welcomed their second child, Kathy.
Jim’s professional life was devoted to supporting and inspiring young people. After transitioning from military service, he began his civilian career as a social worker before becoming an educator — a vocation he pursued for over twenty-five years, teaching students from elementary through high school levels. One of his most notable contributions was the establishment of a high school wrestling program, designed to engage and mentor at-risk youth through sport. His classrooms were characterized by a lively and nurturing environment, often populated with small animals, fish, and tadpoles, which his students greatly enjoyed. Neighborhood children also looked forward to visiting the animals each summer when he temporarily brought them home. Jim’s passion for track and field led him to a distinguished coaching career, where he mentored numerous athletes who achieved success at both provincial and national levels.
Outside the classroom, Jim had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors. Many cherished family memories were made during summers spent road-tripping, camping, and canoeing across North America, often accompanied by his well-known habit of rescuing injured birds.
Following retirement, Jim and Shirley embarked on a new adventure, spending 14 years traveling and golfing throughout North America in their fifth-wheel trailer. Together, they visited 48 U.S. states and 9 Canadian provinces, enjoying the freedom and beauty of the open road.
Jim faced his final battle with cancer with exceptional courage, strength, and resilience—qualities that characterized every stage of his life.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Shirley, his children Michael (Rachelle) and Kathy, his grandchildren Brayden (Sydney), Kylie and Travis, and his great-grandson, Alaric. He will also be remembered fondly by the many students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched.
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. The family takes comfort in knowing that his life was one of purpose, perseverance, adventure and deep love, and that his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
