Date of Passing: Mar 22, 2023
JOYCE MARY PETERS (nee BUFFIE) October 28, 1934 - March 22, 2023. With deep sorrow and regret we announce the sudden loss of our wonderful mother, dear friend, and creative mind. Mom left us on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, and is dearly missed and cherished.
Mom was born in Winnipeg on Sunday October 28, 1934 and was predeceased by her husband Harold; brother Robert; and sister June Elizabeth Kunz Keating. Mother is survived by her daughter Cheryl, son Barry, and brother Ronald.
Mom grew up in Winnipeg before moving to Morris Manitoba for work, where she met and dated Harold before the two were married in Edmonton. As a young Christian couple, Joyce and Harold set an earnest example for their daughter and son, regularly taking the entire family to church, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Christian camp. Mother was a constant worker, responsible for raising her family, buying the groceries, cooking the meals, cleaning the house, paying bills, and running whatever errands were required. Complicating her work load, mom suffered from narcolepsy but was not diagnosed for this until many years after the marriage. The disease struck her at unpredictable intervals, causing her to nod off at inopportune moments, such as during meals, when she occasionally fell asleep with a mouthful of food. Many times, her young son assumed the role of makeshift cook, stirring food on the stove or turning the burners off, while mom was gripped by the narcolepsy. During these many instances, her son assumed that mom’s sudden naps were the result of the apparently unending workload that she had committed to.
Mom was an artist and was blessed with a creative nature and commensurate abilities. She loved to paint with acrylics, oil and water color, creating nearly 100 paintings. Mom loved to take pictures, create intricate quilts, crochet, and to sew whatever housekeeping items that came to mind. In her later years, she branched into abstract art and some hymn writing as well.
Mom remained independent after her husband Harold passed away in 2007, single-handedly managing all household responsibilities until early 2019, when it became apparent that dementia was taking hold in her life. From March 2019 forward until her passing in 2023, her son spent virtually all his time with her, ensuring she was always loved and never felt alone or abandoned. For the last six months of her life, her son brought Joyce to live with him at his home in San Diego. Mom and son cherished every day together, sharing a close bond with each other. Mom is fondly remembered for her consistently pleasant, gentle, loving, non-judgmental and forgiving nature.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kiwanis Place Lodge, her caregivers, doctors, nurses, and friends who ensured she was taken care of in Edmonton until God called her home, where she is now healed and whole, in the company of the Lord and her fellow believers!
Memorial services are at Greenfield Baptist Church, 3712 - 114 Street NW on Friday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m. Joyce is interred at Rosehill Cemetery, next to her beloved husband.
Good-bye Mom - until we meet again, we miss you immensely. You fought the good fight and never gave up.
Hainstock’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
