Dreger, Lily Dorothy (née Angus), late of Riverbend Lifestyles, passed away after a brief illness on March 20th, 2017, at the remarkable age of 98. Born November 12, 1918, she is predeceased by her husband Jerry; her parents, Norman and Ada; her brothers, Kenneth and Stanley; and her son, Ken and his wife Linda. She is survived by her children, Dianne McFadyen (Don) and Keith Dreger (Donna); her grandchildren, Trevor (Loretta), Darryl (Tammy), Colin (Angie), Kent (Nicole), Kyle (Michelle), Breeanne (Riley) and Keia; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Lily began her long life by surviving the Spanish flu and enjoying trips to the family peony gardens (Brander Gardens, now at Fort Edmonton Park). She lived through the Great Depression, crossing the High Level Bridge by tram in a lightning storm, World War II, and an emergency winter flight into Yellowknife when Jerry had a ruptured appendix. After studying at McDougall Commercial College, she and Jerry married making a life at Pinchi Lake and Rossland, BC while starting their family.
The family returned to Edmonton in the late 40’s, and in 1956 founded Dreger’s Kitchen Corner in the family-owned Douglas Block in the heart of Old Strathcona. She had fond memories of hosting skating parties at the Whitemud cabin, being involved in many Square Dance organizations, criss-crossing the continent in the Airstream, whale-watching from the condo on Kihei Beach, Maui, helped organize the first National Square Dance Convention, travelling to Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, and Australia, square dancing on the Great Wall of China, welcoming seven grand-children, passing warm winters in Mesa, Arizona, immersing herself in genealogy research, enjoying a loving fifty-nine-year marriage, and relishing her “great-grans”.
Lily’s life will be celebrated with a visitation at 7pm on Tuesday, April 4th, and the Funeral Service at 11am on Wednesday, April 5th at Hainstock’s Funeral Home (9810-34 Ave. NW, Edmonton). In lieu of flowers, a donation to Prostate Cancer Canada (www.prostatecancer.ca) would be welcomed. Feel free to wear a touch of pink in her honour.
