Mary Szafranski (Szumowski) passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025 surrounded by family. Mary was born April 22nd, 1931 in Nordegg, Alberta. a small mining town with all the things that a small town had to offer; friends, skating, dances, movies and berry picking. After Mary finished High School in Nordegg, she moved to Edmonton with her friend Rose and attended McTavish Business School. After completion of her courses she started work at the Bank of Montreal and stayed for 13 ½ years before she had her first son Francis, followed by her second son Darryl five years later. Mary did a short stint of work at McCleod, Young, Weir and finished her career at the Alberta Teachers Association for 23 ½ years.
Mary enjoyed her time with family and friends. She loved hosting, entertaining and cooking for guests. When not in the kitchen, Mary could be found on the golf course, participating in aquasize, shopping at a mall, dancing, playing cards, or enjoying theatre and music. Always an active and contributing member in her community wherever she resided. Mary also loved to travel, especially to warmer destinations.
Mary’s travelling days were cut short when she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2007, but she went on to continue to be physically active, and enjoyed many activities in the community.
Mary is survived by her son Frank (Tina), and her son Darryl (Allyson) and her three grandchildren Madison (Chris), Riley and Abigail.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Maksymilian and Anna Szumowski.
Family would like to thank the staff at Canterbury and the Misercordia Hospital for their kind care of Mary.
