Roy Charles Akins

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Roy Akins. He was a beloved husband to Kerri, a devoted brother, uncle, and friend. Roy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kerri; his sister, Mary Akins-Peters (Dave Peters); his brother Barry Akins (Lynda); his brothers-in-law, Bill Kostuchuk (Josie McKay) and David Kostuchuk (Tammy); sister-in-law Patti Baral (Howie); parents-in-law Gene and Geri Kostuchuk; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Roy was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Harvey and Catherine Akins, the youngest of 3 children. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) degree. In 1987, he married Kerri, the centre of his universe. He went to work for Ford Motor Company of Canada shortly after graduating from university, remaining with them for 35 years. He was transferred to various cities in Canada with Ford. He retired 11 years ago as the Market Representation Manager, Western Region, in Edmonton.

Roy was passionate about military history and he was a well-known figure in the online collecting community. He formed many friendships with people worldwide, who shared his passion for research and writing. He enjoyed sharing his extensive knowledge with others, and his fellow collectors have described him as kind, wise, enthusiastic, and trustworthy. He was a mentor to many. His co-workers have described him as hard-working and detail-oriented. Roy didn’t like to settle for half-measures or second-best. He is fondly remembered by family and friends for his generosity, infectious laugh, and his sometimes mischievous nature. He loved his family, friends and pets, good wine, and gourmet food.

We wish to thank Dr. Esterhuizen, nurse Brian, and all the staff in the emergency department of the Sturgeon Community Hospital for their excellent and kind professional treatment to Roy.

The family asks that memorial donations in Roy's name be made directly to either The Royal Canadian Legion or the Edmonton Humane Society.

Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. We were lucky to have Roy in our lives and we will cherish his memory.
