Shirley Diane Woloshyn

March 14, 1946 – August 18, 2011

Left to cherish Shirley’s memory is her husband Edwin of 43 years; her father George Melenko of Surrey, B.C; two sisters, Jeanette Brodyk of Medicine Hat and Myrna Williams of Surrey, B.C; two brothers, John (Linda) Melenko of Edmonton and Gordon (Juanita) Melenko of Vegreville; two brothers-in-law, Peter (Olga) Woloshyn of Calgary and Victor (Diana) Woloshyn of Edmonton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Shirley was predeceased by her mother Grethel Melenko (1994), brother Eddie Melenko (1992), sisters, Rose Melenko (2002), Dale Melenko (1960) and brother-in-law Russell Brodyk (1998); and parents-in-law, Mike Woloshyn (1964), Belle Woloshyn (1998).

Shirley completed her beauty-cosmetology training in 1966, in Edmonton and married Edwin Woloshyn August 17, 1968 at St. Elia’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church and worked in the beauty trade in Edmonton until 1970. In August 1970, Shirley and Edwin moved to the Yukon Territory. Shirley with her entrepreneurial spirit owned and operated major beauty salons and ladies wear stores in Faro, then Whitehorse from 1970-1985. Upon selling the stores, Shirley and Edwin ventured into a Chrysler car dealership which Shirley managed for years. The business later changed to a leasing, financing firm called Whitehorse Wholesale Auto Center, still active today.

Shirley had a very strong will and determination in life. She had a magical attribute in dealing with people and thus her unwavering success as a business woman in Whitehorse. Cooking traditional Ukrainian food was a forte she had that was unmatched in the Yukon.
