Sophie was born April 1, 1950 in Germany. She was the second oldest child of Stephan and Barbara Ostapczuk. She immigrated in infancy to Canada where they settled in Edmonton, Alberta. She later graduated from O’Leary Catholic High School in Edmonton in 1968.
Upon graduating Sophie later began a career in insurance where she worked as an underwriter. In 1976 she married the love of her life Dale Morrison.
In 1981 they relocated to St. Albert, and they welcomed their first daughter Candace. Five years later in 1986 they had their second daughter Robyn.
After having their children, Sophie stayed home to raise their girls. She was always present for every school function, dance recital or gymnastics competition. She never wanted to miss a moment.
Sophie loved to garden and took great pride in having her lawn and flowers look immaculate. Her summers would be spent outdoors tending to the lawn, flower and vegetable beds, and if she wasn’t doing that you could find her soaking up the sun, crossword puzzle in hand.
The holidays were important to her, and she loved to decorate both inside and outside for every occasion like Halloween, Christmas, and even Easter. She loved a good party, especially the family gatherings! It was quite common for her to have a house full of people for Christmas dinner and she loved hosting.
Sophie was known for her kind heart, and her contagious laughter. She was the glue of the family, she was calm and supportive in nature, allowing her girls to develop a strong friendship with her that lasted a lifetime.
The overwhelming warmth she gave off was apparent to her grandchildren. They loved and adored her, and she was always there for them whether it was for a cuddle, a sleepover or just to chit chat. She doted on them forming special bonds with each of them.
Sophie was admired by her family for her calm presence, patience, and sarcastic sense of humor. Sadly, on February 9, 2025, Sophie passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the University of Alberta Hospital.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters Candace Nixon, Robyn Merkel (Kody) and grandchildren Kashton and Kailani Merkel. Also left to mourn are her brothers Stanley Ostapczuk, Henry Ostapczuk (Betty) and their Children Christene Gawlik (Ted) and Lindsay Brucki (Justin); sister Irene Chawner (Rory) and their son Ryan. She will also be missed by numerous relatives from the Ostapczuk and Morrison side, as well as countless friends.
Sophie was predeceased by her loving husband Dale Morrison, her son in law Paul Nixon, her parents Stefan and Barbara Ostapczuk and her brother John (Johnny) Ostapczuk.
A Celebration of Sophie's Life will take place at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail, Edmonton AB T5L 4X1 on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM.
