Charles “Charlie” Edwin Berry age 84, unexpectedly passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2026. He was born August 18, 1941, to Howard and Charlotte (Chew) Berry. Shortly after graduating from Atchison High School in 1959, he joined the United States Navy. Following his completion of bootcamp in San Diego, CA he went back home and married, his bride Joan (Taliferro) and they were married for 63 years.
Charles served our country with honor and distinction for 10 years; after completing 3 tours in Vietnam and ending his tenure in the military he and Joan remained in San Diego and raised their four children Rex (Tina), Russell (Donna), Kathleen (Peter), and Jennifer (Shawn). Charles earned a double associate’s in business and business management taking night classes while building a 30-year career at San Diego Gas & Electric as an Engineer/Planner. Upon his retirement Charles took up woodworking and craft painting, creating many toys and annual Christmas ornaments for charity and for his grandchildren. Being a member of Mission Hills UCC for over 50 years, he took great joy in being a part of the El Nido program by helping to repair and create a safe living environment for women and children affected by domestic violence.
Charles was a friend to many and a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandpa and great-grandpa.
Charles is survived by his devoted wife, Joan, his four children, and his brother Kenny. He will be terribly missed by his grandchildren Travis, Trevor, Trent, Matthew and Jackson Berry (Rexs’) Elijah Berry (Russells’) Stan, Kyle and Cody Wells (Kathleens’) and Ashley Herrera (Jennifers’) and his great grandchildren Jacob, Milana, Siena, Adan, Ezra and Everly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Charlotte, his siblings Jim, Linda Kay and grandson Justin.
A memorial service will be held April 18, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Mission Hills UCC 4070 Jackdaw St., San Diego, CA. We invite you to join us in celebrating Charlie’s life and legacy.
