

Donald Moyer Hunsberger, 81, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, in La Mesa, California, after a courageous battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Born on December 29, 1944, Donald lived a life defined by dedication to his craft, love for his family, and an enduringly positive spirit.
The son of Elizabeth Rita Ochnich and Dr. Isaac Moyer Hunsberger, Donald grew up in a household that deeply valued intellectual curiosity and the arts. Donald was very intelligent and academically gifted, pursuing a master’s degree at Princeton University where he specialized in Medieval literature. His deep appreciation for the written word and historical narrative remained a cornerstone of his identity throughout his life.
He was one of seven siblings and is survived by Elizabeth, Carol, Luke, and Heidi. He was preceded in death by his sister Gretchen and his brother Mark. His mother, Elizabeth, passed away just last month at the remarkable age of 102.
Donald was a devoted father to his two sons, Franklin Dehart Hunsberger and Stephen Hunsberger, who carry forward his legacy of resilience and warmth. He was married to Edith Hunsberger for 15 years, and later to Nancy Reif Hunsberger, whom he married in 1999. Donald and Nancy shared many happy years together in The Villages, Florida, until her passing in 2021.
Donald spent the majority of his professional life as a sportswriter and newspaper editor. His career was a reflection of his lifelong passion for sports and his scholarly precision with language. He had a particular love for golf, baseball, and football, and was a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Donald was an engaged member of his community, serving as a board member of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. He also cherished simple joys—especially playing penny poker and bridge with family, moments that brought laughter, connection, and lasting memories.
Known for his optimism, Donald remained remarkably positive even in the face of Alzheimer’s disease. He had a deep appreciation for the people in his life and never missed an opportunity to express his love and gratitude. His kindness, warmth, and unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
Donald’s life was one of connection, passion, and perseverance. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family and friends.
