James (Jim) Kasten was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on April 15, 1934. He entered into Heaven on October 7, 2018. He was the third of 4 children of Ray and Mabel Kasten and was the last survivor of his siblings.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Regina, (Gina) and his sorrowing daughters, Lauri Bender of Lakeside, and Jill (Glen)Schroppe of Nampa, Idaho. His son, Michael, was deceased in July 2000. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Ryan and Jacob (Kennie Lee) Bender, Kasey Kasten and Kandice (Bud) Palma and 4 great grandchildren, Camryn, Khloe, Hailey, and Brody.
Jim and Gina were married on November 18, 1956. They were shy of their 62nd wedding anniversary by 42 days.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy for four years as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist. Jim was a “salesman” for his whole working career. He worked as a sales driver for Coca-Cola in San Diego; as a store manager, then Area Director, for Kentucky Fried Chicken in both Iowa and Kansas. Jim managed Hiram’s Guns and Liquor store in El Cajon for many years and finished his working career as a sales representative for Sunshine Biscuits.
Jim spent many summers on the waters of Bristol Bay Alaska, commercial salmon fishing with his son, Michael and always had a story to tell. Jim had been an active member of the Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club since 1973 and served in the capacity of president, parliamentarian, and for years as a part of the organizers for the monthly Sporting Clays event. Jim was originally a trap shooter and won his class at the California State Shoot during this phase of his shooting. He graduated to sporting clays and never looked back, enjoying the challenge and primarily the camaraderie of his many friends and shooting partners.
Jim was a special person and touched many lives for the good. He will be remembered for his honesty, his sense of humor, his German resolve to always “get things done” and the love and caring he had for his family.
