He was born November 9, 1939 in Hot Springs, AR to Herman Franklin and Ruby Davis Benavente. He was lovingly raised by his grandmother Mae Davis and upon graduation from Hot Springs High School, he married and entered the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He retired after 30 years, obtaining the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
Fred began his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1969, working as Sales Supervisor and in Contract Management.
Upon retirement, he and his wife of 31 years, traveled the country chasing steam locomotives, renaissance fairs, flea markets, and even learned to pan for gold.
Fred returned to Union County in 1999 to be close to his family. Moving to the Ouachita River, he was blessed with many years as a "river rat". He loved to cook, loved to read, and loved his cats. He never turned down a good cigar, a cold pony beer, or a great game of dominos out on the dock.
Fred was an active member of St. Mary' Episcopal Church, volunteering many hours with Interfaith Help Services, Angel Food Ministries, Food Pantry, and many other areas of service.
He also enjoyed volunteering with the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was highly respected in all areas of life and will be greatly missed by many.
He was predeceased by his parents, his oldest daughter Julia Ann Kelsch and infant granddaughter Melanie Denise.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Paula Jean Goodwin of Banks, Arkansas; his two daughters Lisa Vance (Dave Williams) of Calion, AR, Cindy Winters (James) of Norphlet, AR; stepson Paul Henley of Houston, Texas and son-in-law Scott Kelsch of Linden, Tennessee.
He leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Amber Washburn, Justin Misenheimer, Justin Winters (Ashley), Zach Dickens, Tyler Morgan (Alyssa), Jace Vance and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Judy Trost, Sandy Benavente, Marissa Benavente, and Eddie Benavente.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the entire staff at Hudson Nursing Home for their loving care and kindness.
A private memorial will be planned at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his memory to St. Mary's Food Pantry or UCAPS.
