Amelia H. Knight went peacefully to Our Lord on February 7, 2024. She was a lifelong resident of El Paso, Texas and, as she liked to tell people, a fiercely proud Texan. She is survived by her sister, Emirey Loweree, children: A. Nery Geran, Manuel R. De Reyes, Richard M. De Reyes (Diane) and Edward M. De Reyes (Lisa), three granddaughters, Amy Shrago, Jennifer McKnight, and Belen De Reyes, four great
grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Amy was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Robert H. Knight, daughter RoxAnne Castricone, husband of 33 years Manuel B. De Reyes, along with her parents and all but one sibling. She was born Amelia Holguin in Socorro, TX into a family whose roots stretch back to the El Paso Lower Valley’s founding in the 1680s. Amy (or Mom Amy to her grandkids), married her first husband Manuel in 1946. She was a devout Roman Catholic who not only attended Mass every Sunday but insisted on sending her children to Our Lady of the Valley Parochial School. At church, she was a member of the PTA, the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She served as an Administrative Assistant at then-Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso and at a local insurance agency. And when Manuel first began his propane businesses in El Paso, it was Amy who helped set up accounting and payroll procedures, and personally trained her husband’s executive assistant. She and Manuel traveled the world. When he passed away in 1979, Amy assumed ownership of Pan American Liquids Service and Desertaire Oil and Gas. She not only learned their workings from the ground up, but also built upon their success. In 1988, she married Bob Knight and shortly thereafter sold the businesses. That freed her and
Bob to indulge their love of travel. While not touring in their motor coach, they travelled and cruised the world. Amy lived life to the fullest. She leaves behind nothing but good memories.
Amy’s viewing and rosary will be held at Martin Funeral Home-East, 1460 George Dieter Dr. in El Paso, Thursday, February 22 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Amy’s funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 12200 Vista del Sol Dr. in El Paso on Friday, February 23 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Mt.Carmel Cemetery, 401 S. Zaragoza Rd., El Paso. A reception/celebration of Amy’s life will follow. Amy’s family would like to thank Gina Tovar at El Paso Affordable Elderly Care for the years of in-home quality care she provided for Amy, as well as TLC Hospice for its care.
