Andres “Andy” Lucero, Jr., aged 91, passed away on April 26, 2024. Born in El Paso, Texas on January 19, 1933, he was the son of Elisa Telles and Andres Lucero, Sr. Together with his five sisters, Andres spent much of his early childhood in Burbank, California.
At the age of 10, during World War II, he returned to El Paso to help his grandfather on the family farm. After graduating from Ysleta High School, Andres enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. While serving in the military, Andres met the love of his life, Lucila “Lucy” Rivas, whom he married in 1959. After marrying, they settled near the Manhattan Heights area in Central El Paso and built a home where they would raise their three daughters Melissa, Michelle, and Miriam.
After working at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, Andres earned an associate’s degree in Business Administration and continued his career in public service with the U.S. Postal Service, where he served for over 30 years. Andy loved his work as a mail carrier and the relationships that he formed with the residents on his long-standing delivery route in the Mountain Park area.
Andres dedicated many years to serving his community at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, here he volunteered for many events, including the church bazaar. Andres truly loved being involved in the church and the service he provided his faith community.
Known for his quick wit and humor, Andres truly enjoyed spending time playing cards, solving puzzles, such as crosswords and cryptoquotes, and playing board games. He loved teaching and playing card games with his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, often solving the puzzle before the contestants did. A lifelong Dallas Cowboy fan, Andy loved watching the games and cheering his team on. He enjoyed other hobbies such as playing golf and darts, building collections, camping, wood and leather crafts. He was the owner of several beloved horses over the years and dedicated his free time to caring for them.
Retirement brought opportunities for travel with his wife and a chance to discover a new passion as an actor portraying the judge in historical western reenactments as a member of the Desperados and Pistolero de San Elizario. Throughout his life, Andres had a deep love for country music and particularly enjoyed watching his favorite shows like "Gunsmoke" and other westerns.
Andres leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a zest for life that touched all who knew him. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, faith, hard work, and his commitment to serving his country. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community he cherished.
