November 21, 1956 - May 16, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Byron Calderón, Attorney at Law.
Byron passed away in El Paso, Texas, from heart disease, in the arms of his wife, Elsa Acosta Calderón.
Byron was born on November 21, 1956. He was born in Fabens, Texas and was raised in Pecos, Texas. His parents were Arnulfo and Edith Lyles Calderón, who preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by his sister Peggy Calderón, brothers Michael Lyles and Geoffrey Calderón, his father-in-law and mother in-law Faustino and Lupe Acosta and nephew Daniel.
Left behind to mourn him are his wife Elsa Acosta Calderón, his children Juan-Carlos Calderón and Elsa Guadalupe Pilar Calderón, his granddaughter Isabella Grace, his brother Ruben Calderón and wife Araceli. He also left behind aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, sisters in law and brothers in law.
Byron was a man of great intellect, even though he always denied it and was taken aback when I would mention this to him. He graduated at the age of 17 from Pecos High School in 1974, as salutatorian of his class. He attended UT at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1981 he graduated from UT Law School with a Juris Doctor degree, at the age of 23. Hook Em Horns!
He was also a great athlete. He played football, he could box, he was a runner, a softball player and was more than willing to participate in anything else that was competitive. Until his health held up, he partook in and loved San Su. He would always strive to be the best at everything.
Byron was a great trial lawyer and a warrior. He loved and respected the Judiciary. Never was there a case too small or a case too big for him. He had the ability to decipher a case in a matter of
minutes, which always astonished me. He would walk into the courtroom with nothing and I would see the other attorneys with boxes of files. I would panic. He would get up and be as smooth as
glass, which would blow me away.
After graduating from law school, Byron worked for the IRS in
Denver and Austin. His colleagues Joe Craven and Phil Pilar and his boss Willie Hubbard remained his life long friends. He then worked for Kemp Smith, and he always remembered Judge William Royal
Furgeson Jr. and John McChristian with great fondness. After Kemp Smith he practiced with his good friend Richard Contreras. He then had a solo practice until his death early this year. I always marveled
at his quick wit and ability to think on his feet, while in front of the Judiciary. I would also like to thank Keith Meyers for always being a friend to Byron. Sam Sprowles and Jose Munoz, thank you as well.
Thank you Judge Anchondo, Judge, Frietze, Judge Serna, Judge Lujan, Judge Haggerty, Judge Chatman, Judge Bustamante, Judge Pearson, Judge Kurita and Judge Chew. You too were great friends
to Byron. Also Judge Louie Aguilar, you were exceptional. Thank you to James Scherr and Sam Legate for immediately reaching out to our family after Byron’s death, you do not know what that meant
to us. And to the folks in Pecos, Texas - he never forgot his native land. He loved Pecos and he loved all his family and friends there. Thank you Kung Foo San Su Master Paul Schroder. Thank you
Edmundo Lopez for always being there for us. Also, thank you to all our neighbors that were there for Byron when he was ill. Thank you Jeremy and Brea for being there for our family. Thank you Larry and
Ruben. Rindi Summerlin, you were always there for Byron, through thick and thin, my family thanks you for your generosity. Vickie, I thank you for all your kindness and support - I love you. And a
special thank you to my siblings - Celia and Paul, Celina and Bill, Terrie and Curtis and Tino and Eliza for all your support and help.
Let us not forget his beloved pets - Dogoo, Cookie, Sienna,
Otis, Piolin, Little Mama Kali and Ko - he loved them and called them his little spirits from God.
And now, Byron leaves us with these lyrics from Greg Allman and Robert Kim Payne:
“Well, I've got to run to keep from hiding
And I'm bound to keep on riding
And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gon' let 'em catch me, no
Not gon' let 'em catch the midnight rider”
Love you Byron, and may you now find, in your passing, the peace and tranquility you so desperately sought on earth.
