Catalina V. Sambrano, Katy, (January 8, 1930- April 30, 2024) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 94. Born in El Paso, Katy was the seventh of nine children born to Refugio and Francisco Vasquez. She is survived by her sister Socorro (Coyo) Sosa and brother Roberto (Bobby) Vasquez. She was a proud graduate of Austin High School. Katy was a hard worker in the various jobs she held throughout life; she worked with integrity and made friends everywhere she worked. She often recalled the memories of the time she spent working at Kress. They paid 20 cents an hour and the bus was 6 cents. Katy also worked at the Credit Bureau of El Paso for several years.
Katy loved games of any kind! Earlier in life, she played "baseball" and tennis. She played tennis throughout high school and beyond. She belonged to a Canasta club and loved playing cards. As recently as Christmas 2022, she was still beating her family at May I Rummy. Her favorite games were the ones she could play for money! (And she was a strong believer that any game could be played for money). She loved music, mariachis, and she knew how to have a great time. Katy was often the life of the party and she never said no to a group tequila shot. "Might as well." She balanced all that fun by also being such a loving and helpful family member to her own family, to her extended family, and to her chosen family.
She was our strong, independent, loving Matriarch who raised her 2 daughters, Rubina and Yvonne (Bonnie). She was “Nana” to her 5 granddaughters (Nicole, Natalie, Sophia, Marianne, and Michelle) and “Great-Nana” to her 5 great-grandchildren (Henley, Isaac, Carlile, Liam, and Alina).
She loved her Lord Jesus and had a strong, faithful prayer life. Katy had a beautiful impact on the lives of so many and she will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who were blessed to know her.
In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to make a donation in Katy's honor to St Jude Children's Research Hospital or Disabled American Veterans.
