David James Olivas (Dave, Dave O), 54, of El Paso, Texas, passed away April 14, 2026, surrounded by and held in the loving arms of his family. Born October 6, 1971, Dave was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother whose warmth, steady presence, and sense of humor touched everyone who knew him.
Dave was a graduate of Coronado High School, and that was where he met his high school sweetheart, Tonya. Dave and Tonya had a love story spanning over 36 years and built a beautiful life and family. Dave worked in the restaurant industry at Chili’s for 21 years, beginning his career as a busboy and, through steady dedication and hard work, rose through the ranks to management. Deciding to return to college in 2011, he graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and
he was then hired as a project manager for Moreno Cardenas, Inc., where he thrived and devoted his time for the past 12 years. He was known for his hardworking nature, leadership, and his willingness to help others at a moment’s notice.
Dave loved golf, logic puzzles, going to the movies with his family, and took great joy in supporting his children’s activities — coaching and scorekeeping at volleyball matches, chaperoning events, and loading equipment for marching band. He was always ready with
a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, and an abundant supply of dad jokes that could lift any room.
He is survived by his wife, Tonya Olivas; daughters Madeline (25) and Isabel (24); son Joey (15); father Ramon Olivas; brothers Michael Olivas, Richard Olivas (Melissa), and Reuben Olivas (Emmie); and sister Jessica Tharp (Johnny). He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Olivas.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 29, from 5–8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home, 128 N. Resler Drive. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 11 a.m., at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1551 Belvidere Street. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park, 4848 Alps Drive.
The family welcomes friends to celebrate Dave’s life and the many ways he lifted others.
