David A. Portillo, beloved husband, brother and uncle, passed away on May 20, 2023 at the age of 75. David is survived by his loving wife Rosie, sister Rosalie, daughter Antoniette and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anastacio and Pascuala and his brother, Gilberto.
David was an extremely enthusiastic outdoor sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was also an avid history buff. David followed all major league baseball games with knowledge of status for all his favorite players.
Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Barbers Point, HI. On March 30, 1975, he was hired by the U.S. Border Patrol. Upon graduating from the U. S. Department of Justice Immigration & Naturalization Service in Los Fresnos, TX, he was transferred to Douglas, AZ. From AZ, he was assigned as an Instructor of Immigration Law for the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Brunswick, GA at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). Upon receiving a promotion, he transferred to McAllen, TX as the Assistant Patrol Agent in Charge (APAIC) of the McAllen Border Patrol Station. The last promotion transferred him to El Paso, TX as the Patrol Agent in Charge (PAIC) of the El Paso Station.
After these promotions/transfers, David retired October 3, 2001, with completion of thirty-one years of service to the U. S. Border Patrol. He leaves a legacy of a high work ethic and several friends.
Service of remains will be June 7, 2023, at 9:30 A.M. at the Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 3600 Parroquia Street, Messilla Park, NM 88047. The 9:30 A.M. rosary will be followed promptly by the Holy Mass. An Inurnment will follow at Tortugas Cemetery.
