Elizabeth Consuelo Lucero Martinez Dubiel was born on January 16, 1946 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Abdon and Mary Lucero. She was known as Connie to her friends and was youngest of four siblings in a family of limited means. Because her birth parents wanted her to have a better life they allowed their close friends from church, Abel and Cordelia Martinez to adopt her shortly after her birth. She was their only child, and they loved and wanted her very much.
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Connie met, fell in love with, and married the first love of her life, Jerry Lopez. They had two children together, Angel Lopez Godfrey and Jerry Abel Lopez, before separating after 15 years of marriage. Jerry and Connie remained devoted friends for the rest of their lives, even in difficult times.
In 1992 she met the great love of her life Ronald Stanley Dubiel. They were married for 25 years and because he loved her and made her feel safe she was able to overcome both her fear of flying and water. They had many great adventures together on cruise ships and throughout Europe. Not to mention the numerous camping trips they went on together. These were some of her favorite stories to tell.
While Connie dabbled in different careers throughout her life, beautician, electrolysis tech, beauty supply store manager, she most enjoyed working to help others. Connie was a fierce advocate for those who could not help themselves. She served as a court appointed special advocate helping children to be safe in their homes. With her dear friend Medeana Richardson, she also worked as a volunteer and part founder of a center that offered the homeless and persons struggling with addiction a chance to regain their dignity by offering them shelter, job training, English classes and interview skills classes.
However, she found her true calling working at West Texas Community Supervision and Corrections Department as a licensed chemical dependency counselor. She was a valuable member of the team and made lifelong friendships with her coworkers. She was especially loved by those she was counseling because of her empathetic, inclusive and accepting approach with them.
Connie was known for her sharp wit, insightful sense of humor and her technical savvy. She had 40K+ followers on Twitter. She was fiercely loyal to those she loved, and those she loved, she loved deeply and unselfishly. She was a trailblazer and ahead of her time and was the embodiment of feminism even though she never considered herself a feminist. She was a fighter when you needed her to be a fighter a gentle and supportive ear when you needed encouragement. She never judged and she always kept your secrets. She was an original and will be missed immensely by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving daughter and son, Angel Godfrey and Jerry Lopez, her 4 beautiful grandchildren Austin Davies, Tara Davies, Mark Godfrey and John Godfrey and her 2 precious great grandchildren Sullivan Davies and Luke Godfrey.
