

Florence Elizabeth Peterson Dick, aged 70, died after a brief illness on Saturday, December 5, 2015. Born in LaPorte, Indiana, October 19, 1945, she was the only child of Alfred Roy Peterson and Charlotte McReynolds Peterson. A graduate of Greencastle High School in Greencastle, Indiana, she earned her Bachelor’s degree at Indiana University with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, then earned her Master’s degree in History at Yale University. She wed John Russell Dick in 1972 and moved to El Paso, Texas, where they enjoyed 43 years of marriage. For many years she was employed by the Office of Sponsored Projects at UTEP, taking a major role in writing and editing grant proposals. A Life Member of Rio Grande Obedience Dog Club, she was Treasurer of that organization at the time of her death. She also was Membership Chair of English Springer Spaniel Rescue America and was active in the Gordon Setter Club of America. An avid reader of murder mysteries, she also enjoyed country music, NASCAR racing, and good wine. She is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband. John is deeply appreciative of the compassionate and professional care given to Flo during her final hours by El Paso Fire Department EMTs and the physicians, nurses, and aides at the Providence Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and Telemetry unit. No services are planned at this time; a memorial service will be held at UTEP at a later date.
