

George Ernst was born in Jonestown Pennsylvania, in 1922, to David and Esther Ernst. He was one of four brothers, including an identical twin, Bill. His father was known as a stage hypnotist. His mother was a dedicated salesperson for McCall’s magazine.
George served in the Army in World War II and its aftermath in Germany, Japan, Labrador, and the U.S., retiring with a rank of Major in 1963. He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars.
After retiring to El Paso, he carried out a successful insurance career, taking pride in assisting others toward financial security. He was a Life Member of John Hancock’s Million Dollar Round Table, the 1982 John Hancock All-time National Sales Agent, and John Hancock’s Man of the Year for a number of years.
In 1976 George was recognized by El Paso Bicentennial Commission and City of El Paso for outstanding contributions to the 200th birthday of the United States.
George was a founding member of the Coronado Kiwanis Club and was particularly proud of Kiwanis Club activities including Teaching Public Virtue in El Paso Schools and the Share the Vision Flag Display program. He was the 1972-1973 Southwest Kiwanis Governor, was subsequently named Distinguished Governor by the president and past president of Kiwanis International and recognized for service in extending Kiwanis to Juarez and Belen, New Mexico.
George played active roles in the El Paso United Way and Chamber of Commerce.
George promoted the National Prayer Day programs in El Paso, including appearances by “The God Squad”, President George H. W. Bush, Jerry Lewis, and Margaret Thatcher.
In 1999 George was honored with the El Paso Conquistador Award for service to the community.
He and his late wife Edith were enthusiastic round dancers and bridge players. He was an active member of Western Hills United Methodist Church.
A devoted and generous husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, George was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Edith, his grandson Tim Covert, and his great grandchild Nina Hashitomi. He is survived by his Daughter Susan Ludwig, Grandson Gary Covert, Great-Grandchildren, Rachel Covert Neighbors, Tyler Covert, and Maya Hashitomi.

A Funeral Service will be held Friday, June 17, 2016 at 11:00am at Western Hills United Methodist Church. 524 Thunderbird Dr. El Paso, TX 79912, with a Committal to follow at Ft.
