On December 21, 2021, Gloria Phala Thompson, a beloved Wife, Mom, Grammy, Sister and Aunt was
unexpectedly called to heaven. All who knew her will miss her warm smile.
She was born to Truman and Phala Wills on July 28th , 1937 in El Paso Texas where she attended public
schools and the First Baptist Church. After graduating from Austin High School, she became the first
person in her immediate family to attend and graduate from college. While attending Texas Western
(now UTEP) she met her husband Mike Thompson and together they had one child, Mike Thompson.
Before she started her family, Gloria worked as a schoolteacher in Albuquerque, Austin, and El Paso.
Later, she was room mother, PTA member, chauffer and cheerleader for her son and his friends. Later
still, she was the hospitality chairman for the El Paso Horseless Carriage club and volunteer for the El
Paso Eastside Civic Association. She was an extraordinary Wife, Mother, Older sister, Grammy and
Aunt. Her younger sisters remember hiding in the bushes when her boyfriend (later husband) would
bring her home from a date and still she would include them in outings with her girlfriends when she was
a teenager. One of her nephews remembered that when he, his brothers and sisters were growing up she
and Uncle Mike were life savers when they needed them the most. Perhaps the best summary is to say
she loved well.
Gloria saw her share of difficulties in her life especially the last several years while facing numerous
medical challenges. As she slipped away through the last few years, she received extraordinary care from
her husband who exemplified strength, courage, and humor through it all. In addition, she received great
care from the staff at the Cambria Assisted Living Facility and Visiting Angles. To all, the family gives
thanks.
Gloria is survived by her Husband, the Honorable Mike Thompson Sr.; her son Mike Thompson Jr.
(Cindy); grandchildren, Erin Shuley (Chris), Kara Hawkins (Brandon), Farren Markworth (Nate); great-
grandchildren, Grace, Andrew and Luke Shuley, Finley, Sawyer and Owen Hawkins. Gloria is also
survived by her sisters Shirley McMillian, Joy Atkins, her brother Truman Wills Jr. (Zabora) and many
nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father-in-law, three brothers- in -law and a
nephew.
