Gloria Zubiate, a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, and lifelong educator, passed away peacefully on the evening of February 18th. Born on March 23, 1940, in El Paso, Texas, to Albino Velasquez and Fransisca Maya Velasquez, Gloria was a woman of unwavering integrity, wisdom, and grace.
A proud graduate of Ysleta High School’s Class of 1958, she first attended Loretto Academy before continuing her studies at Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso). She earned both her Bachelor of Science in Education and her Master of Education from UTEP, exemplifying a lifelong commitment to learning and teaching.
Gloria dedicated 38 years of her life as an educator at Thomas Manor Elementary School within the Ysleta Independent School District. Her devotion to her students and her craft was unparalleled; she took no more than 3 sick days in nearly four decades of service. She was a pillar of stability, responsibility, and quiet strength, embodying elegance, and serenity in both her professional and personal life.
On September 10, 1965, she married George Zubiate, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage until his passing in October of 2022. Their bond was one of deep affection and shared joy. Whether dancing to oldies, Mexican rancheras, or any melody that moved their feet, they were often the last couple on the dance floor, lost in the rhythm of a dance that endured time and trials.
Gloria’s heart found its truest joy not in distant travels, but in the warmth of home, surrounded by the love of her family. She cherished the company of her sisters, nieces, nephews, and above all, her beloved daughter, Sarah Zubiate, and her treasured grandchildren. She found life’s greatest fulfillment in the simple, meaningful moments, nurturing her daughter, serving others, and cultivating a life rich with love, purpose, and unwavering faith.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. In the last 20 years, she attended daily Mass whenever she was able, praying fervently that her family’s legacy would be one of devotion to God. She often said, “Why do I need to spend money on travel when I have a good book that allows me to travel in my mind?” Her love for knowledge, faith, and service defined her essence.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Albino, Luis, Anita, Angel, Emma, Josefina, Velia, Ernestina, Armando, and Rita. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Zubiate Bennett, her son-in-law, Monty Bennett, and her beloved grandchildren: Louis Anthony Darrouzet II, Liliana Marie Darrouzet, Jack Carter Bennett, and Lucas Wade Bennett.
With deep gratitude, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Silvia Martinez and the dedicated caregivers in both Dallas and El Paso, whose kindness and compassion brought comfort and joy to Gloria in her final years. Their unwavering care and presence made an immeasurable difference, surrounding her with warmth, dignity, and love during her journey home.
Though she has left this earthly life, Gloria’s legacy of love, wisdom, and faith will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. She is now reunited with George and her family in heaven, resting in eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor Gloria’s memory by contributing to St. Rita Catholic Community or Thomas Manor Elementary.
