Humphrey Alex "Red" Aguayo Jr., beloved son of the late Humphrey Alex Aguayo & Kathryn Aguayo (Mulligan), passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, adventure, & dedication to his family & country. Red was blessed with two children, Laura & Shaun who both brought immense pride & joy to his life.
Born on October 22, 1933, Red was raised in Socorro, Texas where he attended Ysleta High School, class of 1951. His early career began with the Mountain States Telephone Company (which later became Mountain Bell), where his expertise & talent led him to travel across the globe. Throughout his career, various contracts took him all over the world; the most notable destinations being Myrtle Beach, Greenland & Saudi Arabia. Red contributed to vital projects, including contract work with Bendix as part of NASA’s Apollo program up until the Apollo 12 mission. During his time with Bendix, he also had the opportunity to live in Mexico, Spain, & Corpus Christi with his family.
After several years working for GTE in California, Red joined Sprint, where he spent the latter part of his career before retiring. His tireless work ethic left a lasting impact on those he worked with throughout the telecommunications industry.
A proud veteran of the Korean War, Red served his country honorably in the Marines. His sense of duty & patriotism carried through his life & he never missed an opportunity to shake a fellow Marine’s hand. Red was an active member at the Tigua VFW in El Paso, TX. “Sempre Fi”
Apart from work & service to his country, Red had a deep passion for classic vehicles & enjoyed the thrill of racing cars. His love of racing began in 1955 where he started racing stock cars in Glendale, CA. He eventually moved into midget & Sprint cars before hanging up his helmet. The friends he made in his racing days, remained close for years to come. For several years they would travel the circuit as spectators & end their yearly reunion with the Sprint Car Nationals in Knoxville, IA. He even had the opportunity of a lifetime when he got to attend the Le Mans. Never one to sit still, he turned his love of cars into a post-retirement hobby & opened his own shop to tinker with old vehicles. His passion for mechanics & love of going fast was something he shared with those close to him. If Red was ever a passenger in a vehicle, he frequently encouraged others to “punch it” or “go faster.”
Additionally, Red loved being a grandpa. He was blessed with four grandchildren each of whom he shared a special connection. He loved coming up with April Fools jokes, slipping one (or all) of the kids twenty dollars, sneaking chocolates (Red loved his chocolate) & spoiling the grandkids whenever he could. More than anything, he loved to make those he cared about feel loved, taken care of & to make them laugh.
Red is preceded in death by his parents Humphrey Alex & Kathryn (Mulligan) Aguayo; sister in law Neva Aguayo. He is survived by daughter Laura Peterman (Aguayo) & son Shaun Aguayo; siblings Richard Aguayo (Barbara), Virginia Aguayo (Larry) & Harry Aguayo; grandchildren Amber Santoro, Tiffanie Peterman, Jeremy Peterman, Simon Peterman & granddogs. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, & beloved friends.
Humphrey Alex "Red" Aguayo Jr. will be dearly missed, but his adventurous spirit, commitment to his work, & love for family & friends will never be forgotten.
