James Edward Brown, 93, was born on June 19, 1932, in Birmingham, Alabama, and passed away on April 5, 2026. A longtime resident of El Paso, Texas, James lived a life full of laughter, unforgettable stories, and devoted service — to his country, his community, and above all, his family.
James proudly served his country as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, specializing in low altitude air defense, and retired with a distinguished record of service and numerous military honors. His dedication to duty was matched only by his love of life — a man equally at home on the tennis court as he was holding court at the dinner table, where his gift for storytelling could fill a room with laughter and warmth.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Dominick Brown; his son, James Robert Brown; and his daughter, Susan Eleanor Brown Saunders.
He is lovingly survived by his son, David L. Brown, and daughter-in-law, Sara Guerra-Brown; his son-in-law, Richard Saunders; his sister, Joan Schnitzer; his nieces, Melanie Hammet, Meredith Portman, and Marcy Schnitzer; his grandchildren, Aydan Saunders, Braxton Saunders, Nickolas Brown, Frederick Brown, and Georgina Brown; and his devoted housekeeper and nurse, Susana Cueto, whose faithful care and companionship meant the world to him and his family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home West, 5054 Doniphan, El Paso, TX 79932. A Military Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Bliss Military Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to La Familia, 1511 E. Yandell Dr., El Paso, TX 79902.
