It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Josephine Herrera. Josephine Mena Herrera, 93, of Anthony, New Mexico, passed away May 12, 2025. She was born in Berino, NM on October 6, 1931.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Joe Henry Herrera (Cruzita), Ricardo Herrera, Debbie Carrasco and Cindi Benavides (Steve), Brothers Jesus Mena Jr, Manuel Mena (Margaret), Joe Mena (Mary), Sisters Margaret Larez (John), Mary Lou Francisco (Roger), Connie Casillas (Paul), 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter and one on the way. Preceded in death by her husband Henry, parents Jesus and Carlota Mena, brothers Carlos & Victor Mena and grandson Jacob Benavides.
Josephine was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church and was deeply religious. Josephine Mena Herrera was a special angel sent from heaven. She was a happy, friendly, loving person that treated every person as special and gave so much to everyone. Not only was she a loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she was also fondly called “Grandma Josie” by the many children she took care of and helped raise. Grandma Josie was known to all as someone with a wonderful and kind heart. She was quick to welcome people into her home, feed them, and make them feel special. She enjoyed family gatherings and visiting with friends as often as possible. Quick to smile, quick to laugh, quick to give out her special love, especially when she saw anyone was sad or hurting and really needed some comfort.
Together with our father, mom taught us right from wrong and said we needed to do the right thing, even when no one was looking. She taught us to be kind and respectful to others, especially to our elders, no matter what. And of course she led by example. She was our guiding light, our angel here on earth. God needed her in heaven and now she is our angel watching over us from heaven.
We also remember the stacks of tortillas or galletas available at every meal to go along with the great home cooked meals. And of course, that never stopped even when her kids were grown and out of the house – she always had tortillas and food to eat when we visited or needed something “to go”. She was a great mother-in-law, and treated our spouses with dignity, love, and respect. Our mom will be missed by all those that knew her – relatives and friends alike.
