Linda Slay Skov passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2024. Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Lowell Slay and Geraldine Williams. Linda was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on December 18, 1942, and moved with her parents from Hattiesburg to Sanderson, Texas, as a small child. Shortly after arriving in Sanderson, she relocated to El Paso, Texas, as her father was a conductor with Southern Pacific Railroad. Linda attended Coldwell Elementary School in central El Paso and then moved to the Lower Valley where she attended Ascarate Elementary and Ysleta High School.
During her time at Ysleta, she was crowned the homecoming queen during her junior year. She was also the spring festival queen, a member of the National Honor Society, and was an ROTC officer.
After graduating from Ysleta High School, Linda attended college at the University of Arizona where she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1964. Upon graduation, she married her longtime sweetheart William D. Skov and moved to Quantico, Virginia, where her husband Bill attended Officer Candidate School and was eventually deployed to serve in the Vietnam War. Upon his deployment, Linda returned to El Paso, where she became a teacher at Cedar Grove Elementary School.
Upon her husband’s return from Vietnam, Linda moved to Clint, Texas, as her husband Bill started his farming career on the family farm. Linda then endeavored to become a dedicated housewife and mother having two children William Kent Skov (Larry) and Robert Scott Skov (Hilda). Linda dedicated many years to ensuring her children were raised with her full attention and surrounded them with love.
As the children grew and became more independent, Linda engaged and volunteered her time and talents in a number of organizations. For many years, she was a volunteer at Sierra Medical Center assisting families and performing other duties in support of the hospital. She also was a member of El Dedon Verde Garden Club, P.E.O., and the alumni group for her sorority Pi Beta Phi. Linda further enjoyed playing golf with the lady’s group at Vista Hills Country Club and travelled with her husband and some of her closest friends. Linda was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in El Paso and attended Vista Ysleta Methodist Church for many years.
In addition to her two children, she has two grandchildren, Sarah Ortiz (Derek) and Jared Skov, and two great grandchildren, Blake and Tyler.
The family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the caregivers who surrounded Linda while at home (Chita and Sandra), and to the staff of The Legacy at Cimarron who provided a remarkable and supportive environment for Linda during her final years. Thank you, Jacob, Robin, Benessa, April, Carola, Dolores, Rudy, Mary Lou and countless others who touched her life, during this time. The family further acknowledges Three Oaks Hospice and the team who provided such supportive care during Linda’s final days.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N. Resler Drive, El Paso, Texas 79912. A private family graveside service will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
