Lucy was a loving, generous, hard working single mother of six; Albert Lepe, Javier Lepe, Sandra Villa, Gustavo Lepe, David Lepe, and Victor Lepe. Born April 2, 1934 in Ciudad Juarez, she commuted to El Paso for work as a young woman. At age 37 Lucy was struck with cancer. She left her life behind in
Mexico for the good of her children. With God’s help and the care of her sisters she recovered within a year. Soon after, she had the opportunity to take over the coffee shop where she was employed. With the motivation to provide a better life for her young children she ran the cafe and made it her own. Her special blend of home-style cooking and warm hospitality was eventually known as ‘Lucy’s’ by her loyal customers. Fifty years later, Lucy’s coffee shop and cafes have become beloved El Paso staples that have provided many jobs for the community including all her children. Many of her family members including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and nephews have also worked at Lucy’s.
Lucy lived a life full of faith and gratitude. To her family, she will always be remembered as our gentle matriarch. Her legacy will live on through her generosity to those in need and through stories shared by customers in all walks of life who cherished the kindness in her food.
