Margot C. Springer was born Alma Margot Cortes on November 3, 1930. She was an energetic and smart young lady throughout her school years - always delivering excellent performance and grades. At a young age, Margot learned the value of education from her Mother, who was deprived of the opportunity to continue her education. Sadly, her mother passed away when she was a junior in College at Texas Western College (UTEP). Margot was enjoying a flourishing romance with a schoolmate at the time ~ and she promised her mother that she would finish College before marrying her College sweetheart. However after her mother's untimely death, Margot broke the promise and plunged into
marriage. She completed her degree while married, and soon became pregnant with her first child. She gave birth to a beautiful daughter and in time, it became evident that the new child would outlast the marriage. A one time relapse encounter with the estranged husband left Margot with a broken marriage and a 2nd pregnancy. Another adorable daughter soon arrived, and Margot realized that life's real gift to her was her budding congregation of children. Margot became a school teacher - and forged her way forward as a "career woman" before there was such a thing. She met and fell in love with an enlisted Army Soldier named Hank (H. T.) Springer. They wed in the summer of 1955, on Friday, May 13th. Within a year, the newly married couple had welcomed a third beautiful daughter, and even a fourth daughter followed before the decade of the 50's closed out. Margot's tenacity showed as she maintained her teaching career thru "leaves of absence" during the expansion of her family. The first 3 years of the 1960’s brought two sons to the family, and Margot and Hank had a full house of 6 children. But as before, life presented Margot a marriage with challenges. She demonstrated extreme durability to make the marriage work, keep a career going, and be a wonderful Mom to the children that became the meaning of her life! Children grow up fast, but a group of 6 of them still takes a lot of time. Margot's resolve was unquestionable and undisputed throughout the raising of this family! She was a powerful woman in her own right - despite her sub 5 foot tall stature. She led by example – showing all her children how to be hard workers and to never give up.The family progressed through life, and gifts for Margot came as grandchildren arrived. Margot was a fantastic Grandma - and loved each and every one of her 9 grandchildren with a passion. Her husband of 39 years, Hank, sadly passed in 1994. This event didn't slow Margot down. On the contrary, Margot became active in her support for the "Race for the Cure" - as she herself was a "Survivor" of breast cancer. At this point in time, Margot made a constructive exercise habit of participating in “Race for the Cure” walks in every location where she could visit children or family. Free for the first time from the commitments of a husband and children at home – Margot’s independence blossomed as she committed to exercise and enjoyed more frequent travel. But once again, the stages of life cannot be denied. Margot began to battle illnesses which chipped away at her freedom. The last of which became her final ailment – Alzheimer’s. As Margot’s progression through this trap took place, her daughters and sons that she had given everything to for so many years came to her aid. This proved to be a difficult time ~ not only for Margot, but for her children. As always, her Faith in the Lord helped her cope with her difficult situation. Her tenacity and resilience were tested in every way, but the bond she had created with her children came to pay her back as every one of her children provided care and support for her in this progressive condition. Margot will live forever in the minds of her children and family. She will be remembered as a loving mother with a stern foundation. She was the backbone of the household as a Career Woman in times when this was unheard of. She was a lover of children, grandchildren, and great (great/great) grandchildren equally. Her heart was full of love for family, The Lord God Almighty, and good Mexican food (and chocolate)! She will be missed…. Margot is preceded in death by her parents; Luis Cortés & Nellie Perales Cortés & her brother; Luis Cortés Jr. She is survived by her children; Margot Shaughnessy (Joe), Marla Blakeney (Troy), Loretta Foss (Charlie), Paula Buck (James), Duane Springer (Sherry), Marvin Springer (Teresa). Funeral Service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Crestview Funeral Home. Family Members will serve as Pallbearers. Interment will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
