Mayre Sue Overstreet

Mayre Sue Overstreet, beloved mother, dedicated educator, and friend, passed away peacefully. Born in Dallas, Texas, she grew up in El Paso and was a proud alumna of Ysleta High School, Texas Western, and the University of Texas, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Sue’s passion for teaching led her to Big Spring, Texas, where she began her career as an educator and met her beloved husband, who was in pilot training. Soon after, they were married and moved to Topeka, Kansas, where her children were born. As a young military family, she demonstrated strength and resilience throughout many postings across the country. Upon transitioning to civilian family life, she returned to her love of teaching in Minnesota, San Antonio and El Paso, inspiring countless students until her retirement.

Her passions extended beyond education. She loved football—especially the Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys—and belonged to numerous organizations, including Zeta Tau Alpha, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, The Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman's Auxiliary of The University of Texas at El Paso, The Women’s Club of El Paso, and PEO. She enjoyed participating in luncheons and cherished lifelong friendships that spanned her childhood, military life, and travels abroad to Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Family was central to Sue’s life, and she loved sharing stories of her travels and simple joys—Friday night dinners, large Margaritas, or Makers Mark and Ginger Ale, which her family affectionately called “the Sue drink.” She relished her connections with friends and family and will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, and zest for life.

Mayre Sue Overstreet’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew her. She is deeply missed but forever in our hearts.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 4pm on November 13th at Martin Funeral Home West, in El Paso Texas.
