Mercedes was the pride and matriarch of our family. She balanced a joyous faith with a staunch belief in democracy and science. If you knew her, you knew love.
Mercedes Acero Pacheco was born in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico in 1934 and immigrated to the United States in 1959. She was a beloved mother of five children. Mercedes retired from YISD where she made many friends. As a devout catholic, she was an active parishioner at Our of Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where she was a constant presence in the choir and other church groups. Mercy was a member of the Order of the Servants of Mary and the Monastery of Perpetual Adoration Corpus Christi in El Paso.
Mercedes’ passions were taking care of her family, cooking, crocheting, and singing in the choir. All were welcomed to her home with open arms and a Christian heart. When you arrived at her home you were welcomed with a firm hug, a huge smile, and a requirement to eat.
Mercedes embodied the strength of women and gracefully sacrificed for the good of the family. Her smile was infectious even in the toughest of times. Her love for family was infinite. She was supportive and above all encouraged education. In the face of many obstacles, she motivated and supported all five of her children to complete degrees ranging from bachelors to doctoral.
Mercedes was survived by her five children, Manuel Pacheco, Ricardo Pacheco (Cynthia Pacheco), Maria G. Pacheco (Helen Coplan), Rocio Pacheco Prieto, and Leticia Pacheco Viera (Julián Viera), six grandchildren, Julia Prieto (Adriel I. Cepeda Derieux), Adrian Prieto (Jennifer Prieto), Sofia Pacheco, Esteban Pacheco, Elyssa Pacheco, and Laura Pacheco, and four great grandchildren, Leila Mercedes Cepeda Prieto, Camila Cepeda Prieto, Elia Prieto, and Elia’s future sister (Nayeli Monique Prieto). Mercedes was called up by God July 1st to bring love to heaven. God also requested cooking lessons, starting with the world’s best tortillas. She will be truly missed here on earth.
