He was born on June 23, 1972, in El Paso, Texas, to Bertha and José Núñez. Rafael was the youngest of ten siblings—the final piece of the puzzle that would lead into what the Núñez clan is today. He was preceded in death by his father José Núñez, and older brother, Gerardo Núñez.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gina Rodríguez-Núñez, with whom he shared a deep and unconditional love. Together they raised three children: Ilissa Núñez, Estevan Núñez, and Joaquín Núñez. He also leaves behind his mother, Bertha, and eight siblings: José Núñez, Elizabeth Núñez, Rosa Núñez, Carmen Romero, Graciela Gutiérrez, Víctor Núñez, Armando Núñez, and Sandra Vargas.
From a young age, Rafael showed passion and determination in everything he pursued. He pushed himself as both a student and soccer player. While earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso, he was also playing for their soccer team. His love for the sport extended beyond college when he played professionally for the El Paso Patriots, the city’s first professional soccer team. Soccer was more than a sport to Rafael; it was a lifelong affection that connected him to his roots, family, and identity.
Off the field, Rafael found equal success in his professional life. He later got his Master’s Degree in Project Management and successfully led major projects with companies such as Verizon, Ericsson, and Voxai.
Yet Rafael’s greatest legacy lies in his role as a father. His children were the center of his world, and he exuded an immense amount of pride when he spoke of them. His adoration for family is why he always enjoyed hosting family and friends in his home. For many, his home was a sanctuary reminding everyone the gift of family.
Even in death, Rafael continues to unite his family together. The best parts of Rafael will live on through his family. His legacy will continue to shine through the lives he touched.
