

Rebecca served as a 4th grade teacher in YISD, El Paso, TX. Rebecca loved teaching fourth grade. It was her belief that 4th was the ‘turn-around’ grade. She saw and pulled out their potential, helping them see their bright future. She taught at East Point, Vista del Sol & Tierra del Sol elementary schools. She was named Teacher of the Year multiple times for her leadership, mentorship, friendship and advice to any and all around her.
Rebecca loved her community working tirelessly with many civil and social organizations. She was instrumental in establishing UTEP’s African American Studies Department, providing direct support in hiring Dr. Maceo Dailey. She volunteered at the McCall center, served as a Docent for the El Paso Museum of Art, was an active member of the Silhouettes, the Phyllis Wheatley Club and Immanuel Baptist Church. She is the wife of former El Paso City Councilman, Cephus S. “Dusty” Rhodes,
With all of these accomplishments, Rebecca’s heart and joy was her family. Her smile and personality could warm any heart. Rebecca was a loving supportive wife, an amazing caring mother, a gracious and kind grandmother and a stalwart sister & friend. She is survived by her husband Dusty Rhodes, Twana Rhodes, Veronica & Wendell Buggs, grandchildren Askia, Makeda, David & Yusef. She will be missed by all the lives that she touched.
