February 7, 1970 to July 25, 2025
Rene is survived by his niece Lennon, mother Olga, his sister Sandy. His father Alberto, Jr. & brother Abel.
He was born in El Paso, Texas. Rene attended Bel Air High School. He graduated from Eastern New Mexico University, in Portales, with a Journalism degree.
Rene had an extensive broadcasting career that began at the young age of 11, when he became "one of the youngest DJs in the world" at what used to be KINT 98. As a teen, he would go on to "spin" at KFIM/92K, "The Big 600," and "Power 102."
With his degree in hand, Rene's television work took him to Amarillo, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Charlotte, North Carolina. Along those stops he was recognized with numerous broadcasting association awards.
You may remember seeing him on KVIA, KDBC, or KFOX where he was both a news reporter and sportscaster over the years here in his hometown.
But if you really knew Rene, you knew his lifelong passion was music. You also saw it in the numerous tattoos of The Beatles or Morrissey sketched on his body.
He was able to share his love of music by creating an actual
"Thursday night club scene." It began in 1999, when he founded the "Liverpool Lounge" at the old Club Dedo. It inspired future local DJs through eclectic playlists which highlighted the best in Britpop, Punk, Indie, Retro, Motown & everything else in between. Those sweaty, jam-packed Thursdays became a thing of "legend."
Many of us will miss Rene's kindness and smile. I will miss his activism for the underprivileged or causes dear to his heart. I will cherish how he helped teach me to fully love life.
And so as I bid farewell to my best friend, I use music. To quote The Beatles, "and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."
