Ray was such a big part of my time growing up in the neighborhood, and it’s hard to put into words how much those memories mean to me now. Some of my clearest memories are at the basketball courts at Roger Bacon church—the sound of the ball hitting the pavement, the laughter, and especially the unmistakable squeak of Ray’s shoes as he lined up a shot. That sound alone brings me right back. Our group of friends, me, Ray, Mario and Robert had some good times hanging out. 

Ray was always easygoing, always kind. Just a genuinely good person. I can still picture him coming down Nashville Street, casually bouncing his basketball, and when my mom saw him out the kitchen window she would call out, “Ray’s here.” That was all it took—we’d head straight to the courts and spend hours playing.

Life took us in different directions over the years. I moved away to Austin and eventually came back to El Paso, and I later found out Ray had made his life in San Antonio. Even with time and distance, those memories of growing up together never faded.

I wish me and Mario could have been there at his service, to honor him properly. We only found out a few days later by chance, after the burial. But Ray will always be remembered—not just for those missed moments, but for all the good ones we were lucky enough to have.

He was more than just a friend—he was part of what made my early years so special. I’ll carry those memories with me always. And anytime I pass a basketball court, I’ll think of him, hear that familiar squeak, and give him a quiet nod.

Rest easy, Ray. You won’t be forgotten.

Ray's fade away jump shot was uncanny
and his quickness was remarkable..

Never forget your sailors cap and 
portable radio and playing all afternoon 
till the street lights came on..

Then riding in your chevy nova
to our favorite watering hole..A&W for 
some frosty root beers and chillin
to some 8 track songs from Santana
or WAR..

Another great achievement was hiking to the top of Ranger peak on a summers day
that was one heck of a climb..
Ray carried his portable radio all the up
and back down without even a missed step..
