With unwavering strength and a life marked by service, dedication, and love, Robert Thomas “Bobby” Hawkins answered his final call on March 10, 2025, in El Paso, Texas. A warrior in spirit and a gentleman in heart, he lived a life that exemplified honor, loyalty, and resilience.
Born on October 9, 1933, in Henderson, North Carolina, Bobby was the beloved only child of Thomas Hawkins and Juanita Allen, who both preceded him in death. Educated in the Henderson school district, he carried the values of hard work and discipline with him throughout his life.
In the 1950s, Bobby made his way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he began building the foundation of his life. It was there that he fathered his son, Robert Michael Wise, from a relationship with Ethel Mae Wise in 1954. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Gladys Pugh, and on September 4, 1956, they joined hands in marriage, forming a bond that would last a lifetime. A devoted husband, Bobby took care of Gladys until his very last day, ensuring she had everything she needed. Even in his final years, he drove her to appointments, took her to dinner, and cherished every moment with her.
A true patriot, Bobby answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army, where he dedicated 21 years of service. As a supply sergeant, he played a vital role in ensuring his fellow soldiers were equipped and prepared, serving during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Though he was not deployed into combat, his extensive training in weaponry and military operations made him a formidable force, ready to defend his country at a moment’s notice. Rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, he retired in 1971, having made a lasting impact on those who served alongside him.
After his military service, Bobby settled in El Paso, Texas, where he remained until his passing. A proud member of the American Legion, he continued his commitment to his fellow veterans and community. In his later years, he found joy in cars, watching his favorite television shows, hanging out with his friends, and dining at his favorite restaurants—Tejas Café and Applebee’s, where he celebrated every birthday surrounded by his beloved wife, family, and friends.
Bobby was a man of strength, integrity, and kindness—a man who left an impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His love for his family was as steadfast as his service to his country, and his presence will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Hawkins and Juanita Allen, as well as his step-son Donnel.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Gladys (Pugh) Hawkins, his son Robert Wise and special friend Sonja, daughter-in-law Shirley Wise, his granddaughter Lekia (Wise) McMillan and grandson-in-law Adare McMillan. His granddaughters Salena & Donnella, his lifelong friends Tony Campbell & his wife Anna Campbell, and Mario & his wife Mary Lou Aguilar and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins spanning across New York, North Carolina, and Philadelphia
Robert Thomas “Bobby” Hawkins was a soldier, a husband, a father, a friend, and a man who lived life with a commanding presence and a generous heart. Though he has departed from this earth, his legacy of service, love, and unwavering devotion will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
