Robert Allen Mack passed away on September 1st, 2025 doing what he loved best- hiking, surrounded by the peace and tranquility of nature on The Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs in the Organ Mountains of New Mexico.
Rob lived a life full of wonderful and varied experiences. Rob was born in Stuttgard, Germany on November 13, 1954 to Robert and Catherine Mack. He grew up in El Paso, Texas and graduated from Irvin High School. Rob then attended electronic school in Dallas.
In honor of his father and uncle, he joined the Army and was stationed in Taiwan. During his time in Taiwan he trained intensely Kung Fu and became an expert playing chess and mahjong. His love for the martial arts inspired him to open his own studio in El Paso. At Asarco, Rob’s fearless approach and deep knowledge of environmental regulations earned him the admiration of both colleagues and leadership. Rob quickly gained the respect of his coworkers and management. Rob also worked for Chevron and then for Western Refining, where he retired from as an Instrumentation Technician Supervisor.
Rob was hard working and dedicated. Despite his many responsibilities, he opened his own business “Comics and Cards NOW” and he always made time for his passion- ART. Rob was a passionate and creative artist who through his natural ability to paint, created magnificent pieces that have been exhibited in many different locations like Senator Eliot Shapleigh’s office in downtown El Paso, the Austin’s Capitol Building, and several exhibitions in the city of Dallas. His passion for art started when he was about 9 years old and won his first art contest drawing the Ricochet Rabbit for the local “No-No The Clown Show”. What was his prize? A giant Tootsie Roll.
Rob created pieces for business and organizations throughout El Paso. He was commissioned to create a piece to commemorate the 100th years of a legion in Fort Bliss. He was also recognized for winning the cover of the El Paso Scene Magazine. Rob sold his art in San Elizario and at different galleries around town. Rob was also a founder and active member of the Art and Farmer’s Market of El Paso.
In 2017 Rob followed his dream and moved to the big island of Hawaii. There, he made connections and quickly befriended the locals, making him a kama’aina (name describing a Hawaiian resident regardless of their racial background who were born in Hawaii). Rob lived in paradise, hiking and walking near the ocean daily, cycling, enjoying stand up paddle boarding, selling his art, eating fresh poke, and drinking fresh Kona coffee until Kilauea, the volcano, erupted. The lava took Rob’s house and his possessions. This did not discourage Rob, he simply relocated north of the island. Anything that Rob wanted to do, he pursued!
Rob was preceded in death by his beloved father, Robert, and his son, Jason. He leaves behind his devoted mother, Catherine; his sister, Carol, and her husband, Frank; his daughter, Crystal; five cherished grandchildren; and many dear friends and extended family.
A funeral will be held on Friday, September 19th 2025 at Funeraria del Angel Restlawn (8817 Dyer St. El Paso TX 79904) at 11:30 AM
Military Funeral Honors will be held at Fort Bliss Cemetery at 1500 HRS.
