Sonjia Crews, 86, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. A beloved mother, grandmother, and vibrant spirit, she passed peacefully with her children by her side. She is now reunited with her husband, John Crews; her parents, Buster and Effie Terrill; and her brother, Bill Terrill.
Sonjia’s legacy of love lives on through her children: Kimberly Arispe (Ruben); John Crews Jr. (Greg); and Karlyn Henry (Todd). She was the proud grandmother of Kayleigh Jamison (Jon) and Mackenzie Crews, and a loving step-grandmother to Sumer Arispe, Ryan Henry (Mary), and Emma Henry.
While Sonjia’s greatest pride was her role as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother, her life was defined by a remarkable array of passions. A member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine. She was a familiar face at the El Paso Assistance League and volunteered at Missio Dei Church in El Paso.
Her zest for life was most evident through her love of dance. As a skilled line dance instructor, Sonjia didn’t just teach steps; she brought people together, helped coordinate line dance jamborees that created lasting memories for many. In retirement, she embraced her love for travel, exploring the world with cherished friends; of all the places she visited, Japan remained her most beloved destination. At home, she nurtured her creative soul with hours spent crocheting, Friday painting sessions and kept her mind sharp at the bridge table with her many bridge groups.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Esperanza, her companion and friend, and to the Endeavor Kellogg Cancer Center—specifically Dr. Campbell, Donna, Sofiya, Dr. Brown, and Dr. Hawkins—whose exceptional care allowed Sonjia to enjoy so many of life’s milestone events. We also offer our heartfelt thanks to JourneyCare Hospice, especially Bernice, Holly, Chaplain Tim, Valeria, Donna, and the crisis nurses, for their profound support and care during her final 24 hours.
Sonjia will be remembered for her willingness to help, her creative spirit, and the joy she found in every dance. She will be missed beyond measure.
