Stephen Charles “Steve” Hambric, 79, of Horizon City, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 29, 2024. Steve was born in Beckley, West Virginia to Harry N. and Mary Louise Hambric. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1963 then joined the United States Air Force. Steve served in Germany until 1965. After returning home, he met his first wife Jane and began attending Marshall University. He graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration in 1971. Steve worked as a salesman for many years at National Mattress Company, International Bedding Corporation, Fluid Process Systems, and Industrial Water Services. He also served as a Materials Manager with Hartec, and as Chief Financial Officer for Fluid Process Systems.
Shortly after moving to El Paso in 1982, Steve began serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Horizon City Fire Department. He continued serving as a volunteer firefighter for over 30 years. After hanging up his turnout gear, Steve became a Certified Emergency Services Commissioner for the state of Texas under SAFE – D. He was highly respected by his colleagues and trained future volunteer firefighters.
Steve also served his community by working closely with the Socorro Independent School District, volunteering on bond committees, fundraising committees, and school-naming committees. Perhaps his greatest contribution to the district came from his work with the SISD Foundation which worked to award scholarships to high school seniors throughout the district. While volunteering with the SISD Foundation, he served as Membership Chairperson followed by Scholarship Committee Chair the second year; then Vice President his third year. It was because of his unending efforts to raise money for seniors in high schools and awarding them scholarships to attend college through this Foundation, that the Texas Education Agency’s State Board of Education awarded Stephen Hambric the 2021 “Heroes for Children Award”.
Steve was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, and friend. He enjoyed golfing, cooking at home, watching football (and he often said his favorite teams were the Washington Redskins, the Bengals, and whoever was playing against the Cowboys). He liked to travel, listen to music, read, play pickleball and hang out with the “A” Team. He was a loyal supporter of everything Carol did, as she supported him in all of his endeavors and cared for him until his angels took him. Rest in peace.
Mr. Hambric is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Jane, and his older sister Patricia (Jones). He is survived by his loving wife Carolina, his daughter Hillary, brother Harry N. “Hap” Hambric, and sisters Pam (Fox) and Paula (Lilly), stepsons Michael G. and Steven A. McKinny, granddaughters Elise and Tristyn McKinny, as well as many nieces and nephews (Cindy Jones, Anna Falkenstein, Steen Hambric, A. McKenzie Fox Coats, Barrett Fox, Michael and Sara Lilly, and Maddy, Allison, and Jonathan McCoy). Services for Mr. Hambric will be held at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 N. Carolina Drive in El Paso, from 5-9 pm. Pastor Wes Phillips will speak at 7, and there will be time for eulogies. A small reception will follow the services. The family requests that visitors wear red, white, and blue to honor Steve’s love of the U.S.A.
