

SFC Abraham James Pettway (Buddy), age 87, of Radcliff, KY, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, surrounded by his brother and sister-in-love. A distinguished veteran, devoted family man, and beloved friend, Buddy’s life exemplified courage, sacrifice, and unwavering compassion.
Born September 13, 1937, in Boykin, AL, he enlisted in the United States Army immediately upon graduating from Boykin High School, ready to serve his nation with honor. During his distinguished military career, he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he displayed exceptional bravery and steadfast loyalty to his fellow soldiers.
His exemplary service earned him the profound respect of all who served alongside him, along with numerous commendations. Among these honors was the Army Achievement Medal, awarded for his service in Alaska in 1986. The citation recognized him for “consistently providing a much-needed community service while enhancing the morale, support and welfare of the community. His tireless efforts ensured a safe environment for over 500 children enrolled within the community center’s child development program. SFC Pettway’s actions, dedication to duty and concern reflects credit upon himself, the 6th Infantry Division and the United States Army.”
After more than 26 years of faithful military service, SFC Pettway returned to Kentucky, where he continued serving his community in various roles until 2021. He was always ready to extend a helping hand or provide a listening ear to those in need. Throughout his life, he carried both the weight and wisdom of war with quiet dignity, never seeking recognition yet always deserving it.
He is survived by his son, Jeffery Pettway; two brothers, Tonnie L. Pettway (Edwina) and Isaac Pettway (Bertha); two sisters, Louise Pettway and Ida Major (Chambers); four granddaughters-Janeeve, Janessa, Grace and Shantel; one grandson – Aliocha; four grandchildren whom he lovingly raised alongside his beloved wife Ruth—Katherine, Amber, Jacob and Ryan; two stepdaughters, Robin and Becky; and numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, grands, great grands, family and friends, especially Steve, Dawn and the girls, who will deeply miss his steady presence, his cherished stories, and his gentle spirit.
SFC Pettway was preceded in death by his father, Herman O. Pettway; his mother, Jennie H. Pettway; his beloved wife, Ruth Pettway; three sons: Abraham Pettway Jr. David and Perry; three brothers: Jacob, David and ZL; and four sisters: Alice, Melnee, Alfreda and Mary and a stepdaughter, Romona, along with her daughter, Heather.
SFC Pettway’s enduring legacy of strength, service, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a true American hero whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

The funeral is at 11 AM on Friday, May 30, 2025 at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.
Visitation begins at 9 AM on Friday and continues until the time of service.
A final resting place for Abraham will be held Friday, May 30, 2025 at 12:30 PM at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, 2501 N Dixie Blvd, Radcliff, KY 40160.
