Betty Jo Gray, 80, of Elizabethtown, passed peacefully at Baptist Hardin Health on July 10, 2025. She entered into the presence of Christ while doing what she loved most, reading God's Word with her friend and caretaker, Arlene Brady.
Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband, who she cherished, Reverend John Gray; dear son, Wayne Hatfield; parents, Henry and Thelma Bell; and brother, William Bell.
Betty will be fondly remembered by her two sons, Michael Hatfield of Louisville, Joel Hatfield of Elizabethtown, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a brother, Bobby Bell.
Betty lived her life testifying to the faithfulness of Christ in her life. Despite many difficulties and sufferings, Betty never lost her love of laughter and especially found joy while playing with children. Betty had a heart to care for her sons and grandchildren, as well as numerous friends and their children. Betty will be remembered for her determination to never give up, being a woman of faithful prayer for others, generously giving her time to babysit, having assorted funny faces, unmatched stubbornness and strength, doing little gigs of joy, telling mothers that harried times with little ones were “precious moments”, unafraid to speak her mind, speak up for others and speak words of blessing. Her life demonstrates Titus 2 instruction to teach younger women to love their families, be kind and honor God’s Word.
Betty enjoyed the small things from hot cups of black coffee, puppies and kittens, Little House on the Prairie reruns, listening to gospel music, delicious food, pay days and treating herself to something new.
Betty retired from Vermont American. She was a founding member of Hardin County MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). Special thanks to caregivers at Willow Creek Assisted Living and Dr. Chris Godfrey who was a source of care and comfort to Betty.
Visitation for Betty will be on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 from 4pm – 8pm at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, KY. Visiting will continue on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 from 9am - 11am with the Funeral Service at 11am at the funeral home. Burial is to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Central City, KY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made out to Betty’s services at this time.
