George was born on April 12, 1942 in Louisville, KY to Leona and George T. Stewart. In 1959, George enrolled in the military at 17 years old. He trained at Ft. Hood and was stationed in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, where he served as a tank driver in the 2nd Armored Division until 1962.
Shortly after he returned to the States, George borrowed a suit from his uncle and eloped with his childhood friend and the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Scroggins. They were married in the back of a grocery store in Marengo, Indiana on November 30, 1962.
In 1964 George became an officer with the Jefferson County police department. He became one of the youngest officers to ever make the rank of Sergeant. George graduated from the 141st Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA in 1985 and eventually retired as a Captain in 1989. He said he was most proud of his time on the police department and he always had a good story to tell. After his retirement he became Vice President of Security for the Kentucky Lottery, and after several years there he went on to be an investigator for the Board of Medical Licensure where he worked for 12 years before finally hanging up his hat and retiring for good.
In 1973, George and Dorothy moved to Elizabethtown, KY to a farm on Valley Creek Road. There they raised their beautiful children, made lifelong memories, and built timeless friendships. George and Dorothy loved to spend their time together working on projects around their home and their cabin on the Ohio River. While Dorothy was the designer and decorator, George was the architect that brought their ideas to life. They loved to spend time with their family, and for their family to enjoy the fruits of their labor. George was devastated when Dorothy passed away in 2010 after a year-long battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. George loved his family and cherished each moment that he spent with them. His absence leaves a void in our hearts, and he will be deeply missed.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Leona and George T. Stewart, and his beloved wife Dorothy Jean Stewart.
He is survived by his four children: George (Oreya) Stewart of Louisville, KY; Laura Christine (Doug) Knecht of Elizabethtown, KY; Terisa (Kevin) Johnson of Elizabethtown, KY; and Stacy (Mike) Terry of Howardstown, KY. He leaves behind his nine grandchildren: Kayla (Harry) Parent, Sam Knecht, Casey (Ryan) Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Fletcher Terry, Frazier Terry, Sydney Stewart, and Hayley Stewart; and his two great-grandchildren, Delaney Knecht-Stamper and Holland Hausman. He is also survived by his four siblings: Bonnie (Bob) Wage of Naples, FL; Dennis (Kathy) Stewart of Louisville, KY; Roger (Brenda) Stewart of Cape Coral, FL; and Jack (the late Ashraf) Stewart of Louisville, KY. He also leaves behind many other family members and dear friends.
The family would like to thank George’s doctors, VA representatives, and hospice team — especially Sherry and Ashley — for their incredible care and support during his battle with cancer.
