

Nellie Mattingly was born on April 8, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky to William Lee and Mary Roberta Ray Howlett. A 1952 graduate of Presentation Academy, she married Raeburn Mattingly of Rineyville on September 5, 1953. She was a devoted wife and mother. During the years she was home raising her children she owned an Upholstery business and later worked at Waldenbooks before retiring. Her hobbies include reading, crocheting, quilting and music. She loved music and played multiple instruments including the piano, organ, guitar and auto harp.
A devout Catholic she was a choir director, religious education teacher and dedicated member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 71 years Raeburn Mattingly, son Rae Mattingly, Jr., daughter Susan Mary Mattingly, grandchildren Cory and Jenna Ruley, great-granddaughter Courtney Mattingly, sisters Venita Fotos, Ina Mattingly and Hazel O’Neil, and brothers Darrell, James, Alfred, and Cecil Howlett.
Survivors include her children; Scott (Pam) Mattingly. Rineyville, Carol (Tim) Jenkins, Louisville, Wade (Tammy) Mattingly, Albuquerque, NM, Todd (Donna) Mattingly, Manton, Peggy (Tim) Donahue, Elizabethtown, Mona Mattingly, Leitchfield and Karen (Pat) Appelman, NC and twenty-three grandchildren; Jason Mattingly, Laura Strate, Julie Downs, Joshua Mattingly, Mark Jenkins, Sarah Mattingly, Jessie Mattingly-Taylor, Joey Mattingly, Stephanie Allen, Robert Mattingly, Michael Mattingly, Jeremy Mattingly, Susan Skaggs, Steven Jenkins, Adam Mattingly, Brian Donahue, Jackie Higdon, Brandy Hambrick, Jamie Chaney, Paige Cogan, Samantha Parker, Paula Barnes, Catherine Appelman, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and sister-in-law Diane (Oren) Dulaney..
Visitation will start at 10 am prior to the Funeral Mass that will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 657 St. John Church Road, Elizabethtown. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nellie’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Presentation Academy, 861 South 4th Street, Louisville 40203, or a charity of your choice.
