Pence; her parents, Burkhart and Ruby Williams Allen; stepmother Amy Allen, and a brother, Bobby Allen. Also preceding her in death were her foster parents (her uncle and aunt), Robert Steven Hobbs and Mary Agnes Allen Hobbs Brangers and their daughter, Wyla Mae Hobbs Osborne (Bernard, deceased), whom she called her sister.
She is survived by her son Tim Pence (Sandra) of Bowling Green, KY, and daughter Vickie Pence Thomas (Davey, deceased) of Custer, KY; two sisters, Marilyn (Jack) Gavin of Jeffersonville, IN, and Faye (Glenn) Kugele of Louisville; one brother, Roger Allen of Louisville; five grandchildren, Scott (Allison) Dymacek of Springboro, OH, Jessica Dymacek (Olin Davis) of Bowling Green, Drew Thomas of Custer, Anna Thomas Wilson (Cody) of Shepherdsville, and Emma Thomas Hardman of Hardinsburg; five great-grandchildren, Gideon Dymacek, Josie and Jett Hardman, and Remi and Hallie Wilson; and two special nieces, Pam (Tom) Kentfield of Daytona Beach Shores, FL and Kathy Smith (Carlos, deceased) of Elizabethtown, who lovingly called her "Susie", and other nieces and nephews.
Sue was born in Elizabethtown in 1935. She graduated in 1953 from Rineyville High School where she was a cheerleader for four years. She made dear lifelong friends there, and until Mom's illness, they continued to get together regularly. After high school, she worked as a Secretary at the Laundry at Fort Knox. She was a member of the Homemakers Club during her early married years. She retired from the Elizabethtown Board of Education after serving 29 years as the Secretary to several Superintendents and Directors of Pupil Personnel. In 2023, she was inducted into the North Hardin Athletic Hall of Fame and received a Trojan Foundation Award recognizing her as a cheerleader at Rineyville High School.
She was a member of the Elizabethtown Church of Christ. When Sue met Herbert, he introduced her to Jesus Christ, and she became a Christian prior to their marriage. Throughout the years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes. She prepared food for church potlucks and for those who were ill or had lost loved ones, and she hosted in their home many church friends and families as well as visiting ministers and choir members. She loved the Lord with all her heart and participated in any capacity where she could help. Perhaps her greatest gift was the love she showed to shut-ins throughout the years. She visited, sent cards, and telephoned them regularly at home, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.
Sue loved to bake cakes and is "famous" - at least in our family - for her white coconut cake!!! Not to mention her Italian cream and German chocolate cakes!! She was also an avid seamstress and made most of her own and her daughter's wardrobes in years gone by.
She was a loving, kind, and gentle woman who loved and sacrificed for her family. She had an ear that was always ready to listen, a comforting hug and a prayer, and an always welcoming smile.
A heartfelt thank you to Michele Clem, Sonja Vanderville, Cindy Bratcher and the caregivers at Peridot Assisted Living/Memory Care. Thank you to Mom's sitters, Linda Wheatley Rowe, Rosalean Clem, Cameron Clem, and many others, for their special love and care for Mom and our family.
