
He was born on May 4, 1941 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Marion and Edna Sadler Barnes.
Tom was the owner and operator of Tom’s Body Shop for many years. He was a minister and member of Church of God of Prophecy and was a man with a great sense of humor. Tom enjoyed art, playing the guitar, and fishing. He was a pilot who collected remote-controlled airplanes, along with building plastic models.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two sister; a granddaughter-in-law, Kelsi Benningfield; and a great-grandson, Evan Benningfield.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruthie Louise Barnes; their children, Nathan (Ramona) Barnes and Cynthia (Mark) Benningfield; one brother, Charles Barnes; one sister, Wilma Smith; five grandchildren, Andrew (Savannah) Benningfield, Chris (Jennifer) Benningfield, Austin (Comfort) Benningfield, Kayla (Austin) Gearlds, and Zakk Barnes; and seven great-grandchildren, Ariana, Isabelle, Caden, Rowen, Liam, Dallan, and Kolton.
A funeral service will be held at 6 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026 at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Pastor Michael Gibson officiating.
Visitation begins at 3 PM on Monday and continues until the time of service at the funeral home.
