
James started work at the age of 16 at a heat steel plant. Through hard work and dedication, he worked his way up to management and retired at the age of 58 as vice president of the company. After retirement, he and his wife of 57 years, Shirley, built a house on Elk Lake. James was a very active man. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and walking around his hometown of Elk Rapids. James was a big Detroit Tigers fan and coached his kids in little league. He made friends easily, as he was a very helpful and caring person.
James is survived by his wife Shirley (Ball) Bowen, sons James (Sandy) Jr. Bowen, Craig (Evanne) Bowen and Kurt (Barb) Bowen. Also surviving are grandchildren Lindsay, Kyle, Mikayla, Josh, Jamie, Travis, and Erin, Roxanne and one great grandson Noah, siblings Thomas, Ruthanne, and Dale. He is preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 3pm, at The First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with Reverend Dr. Andrew Martinez officiating.
