

James Stanley Scarborough, 76, of Elk Rapids, passed away October 6, 2015. Born June 25, 1939, in Marietta, Georgia, he was the son of the late Mattie Louise (Kay) and Edgar McLeod Scarborough, Jr. Stan graduated from Campbell High School, Smyrna, GA in 1957. A proud veteran, he served his country with the United States Army. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant E6 and fondly recalled his service in the Pentagon during the Kennedy administration. Following his discharge from the Army, he attended Kennesaw State and Oglethorpe Universities in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Oglethorpe in 1970. Stan lived most of his life in the Atlanta area. His professional career consisted of sales/management positions with the 3M Company, the Carborundum Company, CRC Chemicals, finally retiring as Vice President, Sales and Marketing, for the Auto Ventshade Company.
On August 7, 1984, he married Martha Cary in Elk Rapids. They lived in Peachtree City, Georgia until 2005 when they retired to Elk Rapids. Since moving to Michigan, Stan has often remarked that he couldn’t believe his good fortune in being able to live in this beautiful area. He loved to fish, cross country ski, run, play golf, bike and fly. He was very proud to be a member of the Amvets Post 114 Honor Guard and considered it a privilege to pay tribute to veterans in that way. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Elk Rapids Golf Club, the Traverse City Track Club and Amvets Post 114.
Stan is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter, Shannon (Andrew) Pils of Cody, Wyoming, Dutch daughter, Marieke Leenhouts of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, brother, Freddy Joe Scarborough of Dallas, Georgia, brother-in-law, Charles (Kathleen) Cary of Chelan, Washington and Woody, the furry child.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Allison Kay Scarborough, brother Larry McLeod Scarborough and his parents.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Peter Kohler and the staff of North Royal Oncology and Dr. Khaled Hafez and the staff of the U of M Cancer Center for their exceptional care and concern.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 13, 11 AM, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Elk Rapids, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. The Rev. Dr. Kathleen L. Kircher will officiate.
