

Veronica M. Hoopfer, age 101, went to join the angels and her departed family on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Veronica came into this world on Friday, May 14, 1915, the only child of Ernest and Lena (Courtade) DuFresne. She was born at her maternal grandparents, Fred and Minnie Courtade’s, home. Veronica was raised on the family farm belonging to her paternal grandparents, Adolph and Lydia DuFresne.
She attended Roberts School House, a one room school house on Easley rd. She then attended St. Francis Catholic School in Traverse City and completed her education back at Roberts School House.
Veronica married Frank Hoopfer on Tuesday, January 15, 1935 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. Frank and Veronica moved to Pontiac for five years but ultimately returned home to the family farm. To this union eight children were born.
Veronica was well known as Grandma Hoopfer. She enjoyed crocheting Afghans for her children and grandchildren and making baby quilts for her great grandchildren. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Alter Society and Catholic Daughters. Some of her interests were reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing Bingo, cards, especially cribbage, and cooking. She belonged to the South Milton Cribbage Club along with her husband Frank. She also enjoyed square dancing with Frank.
Veronica is survived by three sons: Larry Hoopfer of Traverse City, Robert (Judy) Hoopfer of Florida, and Pete Hoopfer of Kingsley; three daughters: Dorothy Nickerson of Traverse City, Mary Boals of Kewadin, and Barbara Redman of Texas; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 13 great great grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Veronica was preceded in death by her husband Frank in1974, daughter Betty in 2012, son Richard in 1960, and a granddaughter Vicki Price in 1970.
A mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski presiding. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service also at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Veronica’s name may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
