Alexander Christian Paolucci, 14 of Elkridge, MD was granted his angel wings on February 10th 2015, following a lifelong illness. His final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and the nurses that cared for him at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
At age 6, Alex was diagnosed with Dyskeratosis Congenita – a rare genetically acquired bone marrow failure syndrome. Alex had the more severe form, Hoyeraal Hreidaarsson syndrome that generally leads to bone marrow failure and mortality by age 12. Alex was 13 when his bone marrow began to fail and despite getting a bone marrow transplant from his brother Evan, he succumbed to complications at age 14.
His gentle smile could melt the hearts of those around him and though he never spoke a word, he communicated with his spirit and the power of his eyes. Although Alex’s condition made him appear frail, he possessed strength, perseverance, and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. With his courage he led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. He could spend hours riding in a car contently watching the world go by. He enjoyed classic movies, going to church, giving great hugs and snuggling with mom and dad. He loved playing with little trucks and spending time with his brothers and cousins which brought him great joy. He spent the summers at the beach where he enjoyed playing in the sand, splashing in the water and taking boat rides on the bay.
Even though Alex’s time here on earth was short, we remind others that his life is one to be celebrated. We will miss him dearly, especially his sweet, gentle smile and mischievous humor. Despite his disabilities, he lived life to its fullest creating wonderful memories. It has been an honor and a privilege to be his parents.
Alex leaves behind many wonderful caregivers that provided love and support that truly enhanced his quality of life. He will be dearly missed by all the teachers and staff of both Deep Run Elementary and Mayfield Middle school. All of these special people, too numerous to mention, provided Alex with love and dignity. Alex’s love also extends to his wonderful doctors and nurses at both the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Alex is survived by his loving parents, Rob and Jennie Paolucci of Elkridge Maryland; older brother Kyle Paolucci of Chicago Illinois, younger brother Evan; paternal grandparents Bob Paolucci of Fishing Creek Maryland and Linda Day of The Villages Florida; maternal grandparents Erlinda Poblete and the late Cezar Poblete of Glen Burnie Maryland; and numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and extended family and many, many friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at 1915 McElderry Street Baltimore, MD 21205.
