Dorothy Ann Phipps, age 93, of Hanover, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Dorothy was born July 18, 1928.
Dorothy (Dot) Ann Phipps (nee Bauman) died peacefully surrounded by her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Dot is survived by her 3 sons, Richard Phipps of Richmond, Virginia, (wife Patricia), Wesley Phipps (wife Dorothy (Dot)) of Elkridge, and Thomas Phipps (wife Sue) of Ellicott City, Maryland, 4 grandchildren, Tommy, Summer, Connor and Lara Phipps and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Dot was predeceased by her beloved husband James Paige Phipps and her brothers, Dick, Roy, Bill and Bud Bauman. Her older and much-loved sister Margaret Sheeder resides in Florida.
Dot was truly a remarkable woman. She was humble, generous, and joyful with an impish sense of humor. She loved everyone and delighted in being around her family and her many friends, some of them she had known for more than 85 years. She had many interests from her family, to her church and book clubs. She welcomed everyone to her home as though they were family.
As a teenager Dot contributed to the war effort working in administration for the Army at Fort Meade, Maryland. Following the war, she met her beloved husband Paige Phipps and they married on April 7, 1951, building a home and a life together for the next 50 years. She worked for her brother Roy’s plumbing business and in later years, Dot enjoyed her work as a secretary for a local surgeon. She was very active in her church, Saint Augustine’s in Elkridge. In addition to worshipping, she belonged to the ladies’ sodality and helped care and love those less fortunate. Dot also frequently helped as a volunteer and substitute teacher at Saint Augustine’s school.
She was always incredibly generous and thoughtful. As a young teenager, she got up every morning to make breakfast for her family, and her generosity extended to everyone who crossed her path. She often brought iced tea and sandwiches down to the utility workers or road crew working in front of her house on a hot Maryland summer day.
Dot lived her life with grace and much gratitude for everything, never missing a chance to send a lovely thank you note. She found the best in everyone. She took enormous pleasure in the successes of her family and all those around her and was there to comfort others in times of need with a phone call or visit. She was incredibly thoughtful, hard-working and wonderfully caring to her family and her wide circle of friends. She cherished her role as a grandmother to her 4 grandchildren who affectionately called her “Grammy” and “Little Grandma”.
Elkridge was her home for nearly 94 years, and she enjoyed helping the Elkridge Heritage Society and other local organizations. She fondly remembered playing cards with her brothers and her sister in later years. Much laughter and fun occurred at these weekly events, and this is how she would want to be remembered.
Funeral Services will be Private.
In lieu of flowers and to honor Dot's lifelong service to her community and especially those in need, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the Elkridge Food Pantry.
