It’s very hard to comprehend when the world loses a good man like Doug.  I know he will be dearly missed by many. My sincere condolences to his family for their loss.  

Even though I had not seen Doug in years, and only talked to him a couple times a year lately, if that, I feel a giant hole in my soul with his passing.  We met when we were both young and crazy and in our 20’s, and had some wild times together.  We both settled down as the years went by, thanks to us both having met women who helped us see that there is so much more to life than partying!  Though the memories of those times have faded over the years, there are many things about Doug I will never forget – his sense of humor, his infectious smile, his intellect – he was always just a fun person to be around.  I know that never changed.

Doug was truly one-in-a-million.  He would have been successful in whatever he chose to do with his life, and was obviously successful in his business ventures.  More importantly, he always kept his priorities straight and made time for his family.  On one of my visits to DC to see Doug, I met him at his kid’s basketball game where he was coaching.  I was about to become a father, and since Doug had preceded me into fatherhood, we talked a lot about kids.  His insight proved to be invaluable to me.

I had planned to call Doug on his birthday.  The day slipped away on me, and then I heard the horrible news.  Even in his passing, Doug has taught me another valuable lesson.  Always make time for your friends.  You never know when you might lose them.

Thanks, old buddy, for all the great times we had, and all the memories.  I will miss you dearly.  May you rest in peace.

My time spent with Doug was brief but the memories instilled in my mind and my heart with last a life time. His person...his personality...his soul...has left a mark in mine that inspires me to be a bit of Doug in my own life. Doug was truly a fine definition of not only a boss, a father, or a friend but that of a human being. His sincerity was like no other and his compassion cannot be compared.  I have missed talking with Doug over the years and now I will miss the opportunity to do that again.  I'm so lucky that I had the opportunity to meet Doug, thankful that I was a part of his "work family" and blessed to be called his friend.  I'm going to sure miss that smile and laugh of his. God's blessing and peace to all.

Doug was great to work with and hard not to like. HE was always very supportive of me and my cmpany (CECA) and although we had not worked together on any major projects for a few years, I still consider him my favorite GC. It was not always smooth sailing, as construction never is, but I believe we shared a mutual respect for our dedication to our professions. I could always go to him for advice and often did. I wish I could have known him better. We never seemed to be able to get out on the golf course together, although he was a loyal sponsor and participant at our golf tournament, every year. I will truly miss him as all who knew him will.

Working with Doug and having him as a boss is an experience I will never be able to match again in my lifetime.  The bar is way too high.  Nothing will ever be able to measure up to it-- or even come close.  

The day never started punctually, nor did it function traditionally.  It included the sound of barking dogs, a crying baby and someone (usually Doug) shouting out, "What're we doing for lunch?!" at about 10:30 every morning.  Unconventional? Yes. Yes, indeed, but it worked, and it worked very well. Something I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.  

Doug's door was always open and one always felt the freedom to ask him anything or talk to him about anything.  He treasured the relationships he built with each of his clients, subcontractors, and he had a fierce sense of loyalty. His word was his word and you could count on it.

He treasured his family most of all, each and every member.  It wasn't something he kept at home.  It was something he carried with him where ever he went, whatever he did, with pride.  

He was generous to a fault, always making sure everyone was taken care of even if it meant reaching into his own pocket to help someone.  Christmas was a BIG DEAL to Doug when it came time to contribute to the less fortunate.  Whatever the cause, he made it a company project - whether it was collecting food items or buying toys for kids -- he did it in a BIG way.

But, Doug had his faults too, as we all do, and they are the things I think I will miss the most.  They made him --- him.  The things that will make me smile the most.

Doug -- a good man -- humble, honest, kind, sincere.  We'll certainly miss him.  His light, however, will continue to shine brilliantly through the good works he has done.

He leaves this world a sadder place, at least for just awhile.

But those of us who knew him well, our hearts shall bear his smile.

The gloom will pass as days go by, the memories give us cheer.

For those of us who knew him well, none has been so dear.

To Doug's Family
We got to know Doug about four years ago when we started our Nehemiah project at the Gethsemane Baptis Church of Washingto DC. When the architect told us that we were going to meet the Wolverine Contractor who submitted a bid for the project, he said: Don't expect a suit and a tie guy". Sometime later Doug came into the conference room with his Ted Turner like mustache, with blue jean and a polo shirt and we hit it off from the start. When Wolverine completed the first phase of our project, and we had a big Sunday celebration, Doug came not with blue jeans but he didn't have a shirt and tie, but he was right at home.
I found Doug to be a man of honor and intergrity. He became a part of our church family. He was reliable, dependable and he was a straightshooter.  If he could not produce a result at a price that we wanted, he simply told us it couldn't be done. Yet at the same time, he helped us to achieve valued results without breaking the bank with his creative ingenuity. Doug knew building and construction like Einstein understood mathematics. He was a Master Builder. 
On a personal note, when Doug told me the origin of the name "Wolverine" I told him I had a son who calls himself "Wolverine". The next time I saw Doug he had a stuffed Wolverine to give to my son.

To the family Doug enjoyed life and he cared about people. Rest assured that Doug lived a good life, he made other people's lives better and thus he leaves a tremendous legacy behind

I'm going to miss Doug; in fact I miss him already.  Good guy like Doug only come around every once in a while.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

Doug was an amazing dad on so many levels.  He loved his kids more than 
anything.  I will never forget sitting in the Dillon household on a 
cold winter day.  Doug and Jeremy came walking down the stairs and you 
would have thought that they were going to shovel snow for the next 
three days!  They had on snowsuits with galoshes and about twelve 
layers of thermals.  I tilted my head to the side and couldn't stop 
myself from asking where they were going??  As it turned out they were 
going to a football game because Jeremy still REALLY wanted to go, but 
of course had to wonder of Doug REALLY wanted to go too!!  Doug and 
Casey were always snuggling on the couch watching their sports, whether 
it be baseball, football or god knows what else.  Casey was Daddy's 
Girl, he adored her and was so proud of her!!

We all know Doug was a big sports fan... I grew up in Maryland with 
Jillian, but my family is originally from Boston.  I currently live in 
Boston, with a Boston raised husband and Boston raised children.  I had 
spent a weekend down the Cape with the Dillon family and upon Doug 
meeting my son Giacomo, who at the time was three, Doug decided to hand 
my son an Orioles baseball hat to replace the Red Sox one on his head.  
My son looked at the hat and threw it back at him... Doug could not 
stop laughing for a solid five minutes and applauded my raising a true 
sports fan!!

Doug was a truly supportive and caring man.  He was always trying to 
help people in need.  He would take the shirt off his back to help 
somebody else.  He was so good to me over the course of many years and 
I will miss him dearly.  In fact his words to me everytime I saw him 
was "Don't be such a stranger.  Come visit more, you know you are like 
a daughter to us."

Oh and lastly, good lord Doug's Chili!!!  Everytime I would come to 
visit he would have that big pot on the stove cooking his infamous 
chili for me.  In fact one time he froze some in tupperware for me to 
take on the plane back to Boston with me.  He had a way in the kitchen 
that was like nobody else.  Many Thanksgivings I spent at the Dillon 
table.

My thoughts and prayers go especially to his family and to all those 
hearts that Doug has touched.  He definitely touched mine.

Ok so I can't possible write anymore even though I have tons.  Doug was 
an incredible man and he will be sooo very missed.
